The thing is, I can actually understand Mantaro's hesitation and pent up anger about it all.

Kevin beat him on top of actually trying to kill him in the ring, and the fight was shown across the galaxy. It's hard to just suddenly forget that especially when it was the last match before all this started.

It wasn't just a normal loss, it was a gigantic one and people did give him shit for it despite having a flawless record beforehand. Nobody really helped him work through it and he spent months on his own with all of that swirling in his head. Now it feels like everyone else besides him is operating on OG kinnikuman mode where people would just forget about these things.

Not one of them ever said they were doing it for Mantaro. Just "Meat is the most important person in the universe" which feels flimsy. Just last arc Kevin was calling Meat a sentimental retard.

This doesn't really work as a substitute for the original devil chojin arc because you understand why each of the original justice chojin sacrificed themselves for Kinnikuman's friendship, not for Meat. They did it because Kinnikuman had a profound impact on all of their lives and had saved them, so they were willing to die for him. You don't get the same feeling here where they never mentioned Mantaro once, they're all doing it just for Meat. Also it doesn't even really work with Kevin who won their match with Mantaro and wasn't saved by Mantaro at all, which is kind of why Mantaro winning his matches should be important for saving the people he fights against. Its like pretending Kinnikuman could have saved the Omegas even if he lost to Pirateman, he couldn't. If Kevin was saved at all then it had nothing to do with Mantaro, it was entirely incidental at best, you don't see anything about it in their match. The hero can only make others see his way if he wins, so its hard to pretend you have the same feeling if they lose

The only believable one was Hanzo, whom Mantaro sympathized with a bit and put a bandage over his face to protect his ego after finishing him off. Even after winning he wanted hanzo to be saved. Just like how Kinnikuman showed kindness to Warsman after beating him.
Personally I don't believe that Illuoinise needed Meat to overcome the prelims, he just forced him to cooperate. Although he would probably appreciate him saving him from dying after his match with Kevin.

The difficulty with Phoenix was lacking the burning inner strength and having to look out for the Muscle Prophecy pages. Phoenix is tough but not tough enough where Suguru couldn't get him down. Especially if he's got all his power. Phoenix redeeming at the end helped too

The entire battle is situational only in the fact that he was hiding his real body like a lich, but exposing his real body is actually easier than it seemed once they figured out the rules. The battle was getting him to accept in his heart the power of "goodness".

The reason people kinda hate stories of kids is that either the old protagonists are way over wanked or way under wanked.

But sequel stories tend to play out like bad ending stories, the heroes are all washed up, they didn't have kids, they're 40 years old and still doing the same shit without passing anything on, they exist to lose to new random characters who are also jobbers, the heroes didn't actually solve anything, they didnt change anything, in fact things are worse than ever, we see directly that their life time of effort was worth nothing in the end, every hero feels like a bad ending version of themselves, either washed up or bitter. People don't really want to read stories about Luke Skywalker being a bitter old man who never had kids and his legacy died off with him.

It's rare these days but there's also the other type of sequel story which is just as bad where the second the old protags show up they take over the story and everything you have to hear from that point onward is about how they're 20000x stronger than the new protags. It gets tired and annoying fast, this isn't your story anymore, let the new people have a chance.

Only stories that give respect while not overly relying on prequel characters is jojo's, pokemon special, and DBZ. And DBZ only works as a continuation rather than an actual sequel since Gohan isn't really the protagonist.

I was reading Moore 1963 and noticed how battle shonen owes a lot to Marvel/DC comics from the 1960s/1950s. I know about the influence of Wuxia/Xianxia, but there's a lot of influence from Western comic books there too. Like how the powers are written and the scrambles. The book made me aware of things from that time, such as violence. There is a certain rule about it.

Basically the power of Friendship ONLY works if you have ACTUAL good friends and they are redeemable in the end, not just partners who might not have the best interest in you, basically the whole "What kind of friends are these?"

Like in the devil chojin arc where Terryman fought the Mountain, and he lost control when Mountain laughed about them being dead, and Terry just starts assaulting him in an illegal way during a match. That moment had more weight for me for their friendship.
Maybe the other justice chojin never actually getting fights is a big part of it. Like they need the fights to show their character development and their passion, to get some flashback about their friendship, or to get angry at a villain over their friends. They need to be able to fight to show who they are more.

That's definitely a big reason why. Sure, having slow, quiet scenes where everybody has time to breathe and relax is great, but when the series is focused entirely around wrestling, having characters who don't wrestle and exist solely to cheer on everybody else makes them feel more like dead weight. We haven't seen Terry have an actual fight since the Replacement arc (not counting the quick loss against Bone Cold or the elimination in the preliminaries) and an actual win since Rex King.

The problem is that the quiet moments aren't used to showcase their personalities either, they're mostly generic friendship stuff before everyone goes back to shitting on Mantaro.

Take Kevin and Mars as examples of characters that they bothered to actually do stuff with during the non-fighting time: I can believe that Kevin's made progress towards understanding what friendship really is because even after he fucks off with his half of the key, he's carrying around pieces of Chloe and Mars. Him keeping mementos is a quaint little personality trait that actually shows up several times (like when we see how he's decorated his gym).

Mars shows his growth in the way he interacts with the idol army, and those interactions are used to build momentum for his sacrifice in his fight. Even ignoring the meatwank, he hypes the rest of the members up and saves Barrierfreeman but remains an overconfident brat.

Does it make complete sense from where they start? No. Does it give them actual characteristics besides the one personality trait? Yes.

Brocken Jr. already got convered to the Justice side by Ramenman and is helping because of that.
Warsman was shown kidness by Bibina outside of the ring and Sugur treated him with respect when the crowd was screaming for him to slam warsman's head on his claw so he'd end up like Ramenman.
Wolfman is kinda eh but I can see him going "I cant let this guy hog the spotlight as Japan's hero rep!"

The only odd one out is Robin, but you could say he just saw how Warsman changed and went with it.
