As someone who isn't a sperg and doesn't get all my news from twitter, in addition to actually playing DQ, the censorship shown happened about a decade before the DQ3 remake in a Japanese only game. Dragon Quest Monsters, the 3DS remake of the first game. It had several iterations following that, all again, in games exclusive to Japanese markets. DQ3 even got ported twice in that time to Western platforms with no censorship.

I'm surprised that Japan didn't try to make more ship girls after Kantai Collection with actual storyline and real warships involved instead of just moe girls.
