This scene is killing it for me. The fact that Hikaru's decision to not kill Yoshiki is based entirely on a lie he told under duress, when he was clearly traumatized and scared out of his mind.

I was really fucking drunk when I wrote that post yesterday and I failed really hard at expressing what I wanted to say, I always felt like the way Yoshiki responded in the opening scene of ep 1 was heavily influenced by how terrified he was. Yes, he very quickly (near immediately) grew to appreciate having "Hikaru" back, but in the context of that scene, where 1. the amoeba monstrosity revealed itself, 2. confirmed that his best friend was truly dead, and 3. expressed that he might have to kill him, Yoshiki seemed truly terrified, and his "nice to meet you" feels to me a little hollow, even if he would truly mean every word of it one hour later, after having some time to digest what happened. That's why I say it felt like Hikaru spared him "on a lie". I just can't imagine Yoshiki was in the right kind of mind, him being scared shitless, shaking all over while being hugged by an eldritch monster, to make any kind of rational statement that was reflective to his true current state of mind.
