A fun love story about necrophilia, insanity and zombie movie references.

Yeah if this was a visual novel I guess that'd be the entry point to Darin's route.
Still, I feel like the adults just threw Chihiro unprepared against a murderous zombie. Grandpa I can understand because he's senile and has brain damage from so much zombie venom, but Danichiro could have helped Chihiro with his extensive resources and probably if he was with him at Zoma, wouldn't have fallen for Darin's father tricks.
Chihiro's dad is calm and mostly a non-character, a true monk unconcerned by worldly affairs or his son eaten by his girlfriend. Dunno, if Danichiro who has combat experience as part of his training in the gentlemanly ways was easily incapacitated by Rea, he couldn't expect a teenage boy over his head with this to fare much better.
Still I really enjoy the concept of this author. Rather than the mindless rage monsters or cursed corpses that have become a cliché at this point, the author conceived venomous zombies who have a somewhat scientific background and who eat not out of hunger but out of love. I think that's really cool for a dark romcom/drama story.

Guess that was because I read entire volumes in a whole sitting so I didn't have time to get annoyed by them. I kind of understood it as a mistake made by Chihiro and Rea. I probably would have gotten angry by it since its usually used as a cheap reset by lazy authors when they can't get out of a certain plotline or want to stall the story for more volumes. But in this case I enjoyed that Rea didn't just magically get over the amnesia and it was actual permanent damage from the guys at Zoma messing with her brain, thus accelerating her downfall.
Once again speaking in visual novel terms, accepting Darin's offer to go to Zoma is what triggered this Bad End imho. But I really look forward to your commentary and by all means sperg all over the thread. All dialogue is fun

As a Wankofag I see nothing wrong with just ending the story right here.

I remember back when I first read this, the cheap page that displayed the manga didn't have the next chapter and my blood ran cold when I thought this was it. Then I browsed forums (which were a thing back then) to discuss if this was it but there wasn't much commentary (imho underrated as a manga and anime) until I finally found the next chapter.
Its controversial so anyone wanting to end the story here, feel free to do so. I also think this would have been a fitting stop since its like zombie movies that end in horror and with most getting eaten.
Kind of reminds me of Shaun of the Dead. Starts off as a comedy and ends up with most of the protagonists you knew through the movie eaten or torn to pieces

You can think of the story so far as a horror story with a dramatic romance, Chihiro got his wish of being eaten by a zombie girl and Rea lived the life of a normal girl (somewhat) before fully turning, and now will hunt people until she's taken out by the government probably.

Well fun fact anon, you even got neurons in your stomach that connect to the rest of the body. I know cuz I'm a huge nerd but basically in order to save energy transmitting signals, the body has neurons in the stomach to detect toxins and other stuff for you rather than having the brain waste time on that too. Afaik just like Babu, Rea was merging with nature and is in the process of returning to the dirt. Guess she is decomposing but far slower now and retains her consciousness (mostly, she still seemed to want to eat the Furuya grandkids) which I'm not sure if its nice or a fate worse than death. Rather than being put down after going on a rampage and losing her sense of self, she is to live a long life in nature and see people grow old and die.
As for the white color, I think it was the author's stylistic choice since she isn't like that in the well.

I don't entirely think this is the editor's fault.
Thank you for the dump, it was an interesting dive in a romcom era fifteen or so years past. I'd call it a goddamn mess of failed opportunities: so close to be good, but it fails in most regards. It suffers from multiple identity crises (it can't choose it if wants to be a comedy, a horror or ecchi, and while some chapters nail a single feeling it's completely incoherent). It fails to give depth to almost all characters and the endless cliffhangers and asspulls are typical of extremely poor planning and writing (probably the author had a rough idea of where to go). The ending is just complete bullshit but it's the kind of bullshit the author has thrown again and again and again. Wanko is misused, Mero is misused, the only female character with decent buildup is Darin and it's bloody hilarious that she has 0 fanart because, despite being essentially dominant in the manga, she was barely in the anime.
Oh well, it was nonetheless a nice dive. Thank you kind Anon.

Finally I can sperg completely. I liked chapter 54 and while sad I think I would have accepted it to end in such a tragic way, being based around zombie horror movies and being the protagonist's fetish to be eaten by a zombie girl, in a twisted way he'd be getting his wish.
On the other hand I was too sad because for one, I did enjoy Rea and Chihiro's romance. I don't really mind the "Thanks for the meal" line since Rea and Chihiro have been known to troll each other and tease during the first chapter, so that'd be in line with them to not say it directly, since they already have kissed and Rea basically ate his fucking heart.
I kind of wish the author gave us insight on what their relationship would be like.
I didn't like the Epilogue, because it makes me think that Chihiro and Rea broke up or he died. It probably will make the Wanko fags happy though.

Eh I liked the tonal dissonance in the chapters but I agree with the sentiment that not everyone was that developed. I think Darin was, since we delved into her backstory and motivations quite deeply back at the Zoma arc but Wanko, Mero, and Chihiro's dad in particular were misused. I wish we also had Danichiro interact with Chihiro more actively, maybe cooperate to make the redemption arc hit harder.

Good question. What would I have changed? Stick to fewer lanes. Cut characters that have little relevance or shock value relevance (Aria is delicious chocolate, but she's useless). Danichiro should have been approached more carefully, the line between obsessed father and crazy sex pervert was too blurred and he was a walking Deus Ex Machina. Cut the awful amnesia idol chapters.
Or even harsher changes: Wanko is in the end useless, use her space to develop Rea more. Cut the amnesia plotline entirely and make it that Rea progressively loses memory thanks to zombie degeneration, mirroring her physical decay and you can keep the final sacrifice. If you're hellbent in making Darin the main female co-protagonist, introduce her sooner. There's a lot from minor to major you can change to improve the flow.

How would you think it'd be good to develop Rea? More date chapters? More having Rea fight Chihiro who wants to keep her safe vs Rea's need to experience life with all its risks as her body decomposes?
I think just having her lose memories and decay would need to be approached carefully. A similar theme runs with Sakura Matou in Heaven's Feel and a lot of fans hate her because they deem her useless since a lot of her route is spent bedridden. I think Rea would need to maintain some agency.

Thanks for the storytime. The characters are great but the story went downhill during the end of the Zoma arc. Making Rea lose her memories means we lose her as a character for the last part of the manga. And the ending wasn't satisfying because the author didn't commit to anything. Rea should have either rotted away within a year or Chihiro should have died. Keeping both alive is trying to have your cake and eat it too. And he couldn't even commit to who Chihiro married. Also having two major fakeouts in the last two chapters is too much.

Yeah I'm tired of those as well. For completed works I would recommend Medaka Box (it has a weak start but is worth it), Houseki no Kuni, Spirit Circle, Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou, and, if you don't mind yuri, KimiTsuzu.
For ongoing manga I would say Tengoku Daimakyou, Mietemasu yo! Aizawa-san, Warui ga Watashi wa Yuri ja nai, SasaKoi, and Miyu-chan wa Zutto Tomodachi.

Thank you very much for posting, I quite enjoyed this storytime, since it was one of my first anime, yet I never read the manga and lost sight of it, after I heared the ending was tragic and thus never went for it.

Generally speaking, I think the endings biggest weakpoint is not wanting to comitt to something, but even that aside, I absolutely agree with the anons pointing out its flaws on the previous arcs, like >>281514812 and >>281514880 and the other ones. The open end might have worked better still, had the leadup been better for it, or a better ending could have redeemed them - but who knows.

Overall, I am afraid, Sanka Rea is doomed to be one of those series, where the good parts are really good, but due to a lot of lost potential and wasted time, it never got more popular. I personally would have favored more focus on Chihiro and Reas Love. While I am to much of a happy ending sweettooth to enjoy his tragic sacrifice, it could have worked well, if that had been done.

I guess you just remember fondly, what you liked and headcanon to headcope the details, like with series with similar issues. I wonder if it would benefit from a remake or something like it.

Focus more on Rea and Chihiro. They are the core of the story, the main pairing and there is no need to pretend otherwise. Wanko and Darin would work well as supporters. Cut the filler chapters with the second line characters, instead give us more of Chihiros and Reas Antics. Make it a love story worth Chihiros final sacrifice, if you want to be a bittersweetfag about it or embrace beeing a happy ending chad with them finally getting together - perhaps Chihiro accepting becoming a half-zombie like his grandfather to stay with Rea as long as he can. Or, for a middle ground both accepting that their lifes might be shortened. Rea might rot, Chihiro might suffer the effects of the poison, but both promising to live together as fully as they can - if you want to make it a positive message about life and so on.

The best, actually. Both of them, actually. Not joking here - I think, while Sanka Rea is an awfully flawed work, one of the key aspects why its still beloved and the former awfully frustrating, is its main characters and their dynamic, both beeing multilayered and their interactions just beeing a lot of fun. Rea, as rightfully pointed out by many wise anons, is no helpless princess once taken out of her prison, Chihiro is a fucking dork, but no doormat and you can't help but root for him to succeed in caring for the zombie he made. He perhaps is the best execution of the otaku getting the ojou gal archetype I have seen so far.
