A pilot in an neverending space spar ends up stranded on a planet with no way to make it back to, or even communicate with, the space humans within his lifetime. He has his EXTREMELY advanced space fighter-robot, and the bro-tastic AI that drives it, but otherwise he is on his own.

He is forced to make a deal with the much lower tech humans that live on this world to survive, and in doing so over time acclimates to a much more chill and laid back way of living as opposed to the hyper militaristic, inhumanely efficient necessary evils of life in space.

tldr: its a 'cog in the machine has to learn how to be a person' story, with some cool robots and good scifi writing.

The episode after that pretty clearly signals that Gargantia never could have taken the pirates in a straight fight. The pirates are no match for Ledo, but the Gargantians would have gotten their ASSES kicked if they tried to fight back on their own.
And they know that. Which is why they panic and get angry when Ledo sinks those pirate ships: they just got pulled into a conflict that they expect to lose.

they had a first hand account of suddenly becoming capable of it, just ask Ledo to fly out and sink the entire fleet

they didnt fight back not because they were scared of losing, since lets be honest, they could probably take on the pirates, they knew Gargantia is a big ass orbital cannon

Gargantia's mass driver is extremely strong as a long range attack option, but a very poor matchup against the pirates. Small, fast moving targets that can scatter are basically the worst possible thing to try and use that artillery against, and once they get in close enough you can't use it at all.

The mass driver is only strong because no one else knows they have it. Anyone who knew what it was, and figured out how to play against its weaknessess, would negate it as an advantage with trivial ease just by rushing them with a sneak attack.

Fucking hell I want to go back. Anyway this was nice little anime. Loved the setting and most of the characters. Sadly the sequel got canned and turned into a light novel, Amy and Ledo get married in the end.
