It was okay. New and interesting but nothing to remember much a year from now, and that's not just because it's short. Ultimately, its message was "We know there's a lot of you out there with shitty lives. We all wish we can save you, but we can't. Just know that you're not alone, and please don't give up, life is tough." and that's what it ended on. The story itself ultimately didn't matter. Both girls will still likely end up as prostitutes or get into toxic relationships because their families were still fucking terrible. Only the shota "won".

I didn't really like the ending of takopi, its too much of an asspull for me. But its a great anime overall. Not really sure on how you would compare these shows tho. Same, and it's a damn shame. However, ever since I read it for the first time I have wondered, how could you adapt this manga? I recently rewatched Natural Born Killers and I think that style of directing could fit TWIM extremely well.

Don’t have what should be an emotional sacrifice be overshadowed by multiple dues ex machinae in a row that the viewer questions when the story should instead be wrapping up.
Memories from an alternate universe is majorly underwhelming and has become a total japanese media cliche as of this point. But if it has to be done, could there be something a little stronger than a notebook randomly opening and just happening to land on a doodle?

Ending was obviously manipulated to get to a message that wasn’t ever conveyed in the series before then. Takopi’s realization that to save Shizuka requires a sacrifice instead of an acceptance of consequences is majorly misguided. The series works best when reveling in how “impossible” the situation is for each character to escape, and fumbles when settling on a solution to their problems.

I think it would have the balance the brutality and comedic aspects well in order for it to be a good adaptation. I really wish a good studio would pick it up, because it is an insane ride from start to finish. Either that or Kiichi are my dream adaptations.

It doesn't really try to say that talking to each other magically resolves bullying. However, your differences won't be resolved without talking first. Takopi got his eye gauged out, because he didn't understand Marina nor Shizuka at that point. The story is more about understanding others and their perspective. Takopi lives with both of them and when he has one sided view he only makes things worse. When he understands both, he can make things right. His magic just pushed Marina and Shizuka to get on some common ground for a moment. They become friends not because of the parallel timeline memories, but because they actually have a lot in common.

The girls becoming tools for Takopi to learn a lesson is such a disappointment direction. And Marina’s abusive behavior in the OG timeline was completely one-sided. Not talking about justifying why she acts that way, but Shizuka would have been happy to deescalate if she was ever once given the opportunity by someone who refused to acknowledge her as a person. The series takes its drama from depressingly realistic scenarios and uses magic to solve the central conflict. If the author was trying to make a statement on actual bullying, what the hell are you supposed to take away from it beyond surface level observations? It’s obvious he was more interested in making a series about extreme behavior than wrapping in a message. Nothing wrong with that, but come on, the fact the ending requires so much defending points to something.
