Imagine what would happen if one of the PK babies turned into a karma demon when they grew up? They have no countermeasures nor do they know how to spot them, eventually destroying the world.
Also how would death feedback work once they get more than one child soldier? They would recognize each other as kin and would stop being able to kill other PK users.

I don't blame Kiroumaru for going with the devil he knew because he and his colony would've probably been destroyed the moment Squealer seized power. If he remained neutral his colony would've probably also been destroyed by the cantusers going full scorched-earth on the molerats anyway.

The great thing about the characters is that the very traits that allows the characters to succeed is also the trait that undoes them.
Squealer might've won if he was less ruthless and more open to collaboration with the other colonies but only a power-hungry madman would have the guts to come up with such a risky yet brilliant plan.
Kiroumaru was a noble man that did attempt to rise up but due to his nature he was incapable of considering riskier and more cruel approaches. He would always be able to keep his colony safe but unlike squealer he would never be capable of liberating his race from the shackles that the cantusers imposed on them.

It basically depends on whether an individual believes they're responsible for the death or not. Are you a murderer if someone is dying of an illness and you don't immediately rush to the nearest pharmacy and spend literally all your money to buy the life-saving medicine?
There's enough degrees of separation between outright murdering someone and releasing an animal that may or may not murder someone while you're asleep for the death feedback to not trigger or be lethal depending on the individual that released the cat.

They weren't bad but their main purpose was to expand on the world of SSY and how their society worked. They were always going to be less interesting than the molerats because they were never going to be more than passive observers.
The molerats might've been physically shackled by cantus but only they would be capable of driving the plot forward because they weren't mentally shackled by cantus society the way the cantusers were

The core of death feedback is the guilt from killing one's own kind, accidentally or purposefully, directly or otherwise. It's why Saki almost dies to it herself in the final episode.
The question that raises is whether someone of sufficient mental gymnastics can convince themselves that "they're not responsible," but in theory that kind of mental disassociation has been bred out of the PKers over their hundreds of years.

Both work depending what you want. Squealer could have done good in waiting longer, getting more of those cantus users by repeatedly breeding Maria until he got 5 to 10, then lobotomize them to become directed by him.
His cantus experiment was okay but still too young and not nearly obedient enough, it would be worth to wait 5 - 10 more years until he could perfect it and make himself a cantus army.

Death feedback triggers based on self-perception and only works fully if you intend on actively murdering a specific individual. Generally the more degrees of separation you are removed from a murder the weaker the effect will be and how much weaker it'll be depends on the individual and how they perceive their actions.

That's what I'm asking. Cantus users were bred to be hyper empathetic, so if one was born without that empathy (as some kind of mutation or whatever) they'd be truly terrifying. It's different from a karmic demon since those were a loss of control over their powers - a cantus user without empathy would have full control over their ability to kill indiscriminately.

I've been meaning to rewatch sometime. I used to be all about this shit. I even read the novel. I think I was like 17 when the series aired and I don't think I've since seen anything that's quite like. Extremely interesting worldbuilding that really fuels the imagination.
