It's a way of interacting with meaning. Useless practices is what makes the immersion of the ritual/place come together. For example, in sports there's lots of silly rituals and role-playing that people do because it immerses in the set up of the game and the outlook of the game. The silly rituals and play in churches for religion and so on.
When you do all the busy work, when you do all the waste the entire system opens up to you and you can see the important things to target and do. Like he says, intelligence and reason is what takes you out of these spaces but useless and wasteful practices destroys that barrier.
A really weird example is the death of suspension of disbelief, if everyone is cinemasins-maxxing, how are you going to enjoy the movie, there's no immersion. If you are nitpicking details like that, you aren't enjoying the entire thing and grabbing it's core parts. Sorry to use another e-celeb example but YMS and Synecdoche New York (I think that's the movie) where he starts getting random details wrong and so screwed up that the project of going through the movie falls apart and he burns out.
