So let me get this straight: Lina Inverse was, for several years, the most recognized and most popular anime character in Japan, and Megumi Hayashibara's career was launched by performing as her, and Hayashibara's charisma and work ethic as Lina (and other roles in the 90s) turned seiyuu from a job to a celebrity position... and zoomers have no idea what Slayers is??

How does that even happen?!

Time goes forward my little zoomie. I know, crazy concept. It's not healthy to live in constant state of stagnation but rather move on and do new things too.

>Megumi Hayashibara's career was launched by performing as her
Hayashibara was already hugely popular for being Ranma, a much more pervasive character in '90s otaku culture.
Lina was another hit, yes

>Lina Inverse was, for several years, the most recognized and most popular anime character in Japan
No, kids' shows would have been overwhelmingly more popular. Doraemon maybe? Anpanman? Though in the 90s Sailor Moon was probably everywhere and more current.
>Megumi Hayashibara's career was launched by performing as her
No, she was already pretty big by then.
>Hayashibara's charisma and work ethic as Lina (and other roles in the 90s) turned seiyuu from a job to a celebrity position
More like because she effectively combined it with idol singing. At least as I understand it.

>Naga is 6'0"
no no no, don't get my hopes up, my penis is going to explode with happiness.
I found a site (I don't remember which one) where they said or estimated the characters' heights and Naga couldn't come close.
even AI says so
Anonymous No.281540035
>>281539280
The reason AI says so is because Lina Tsuushin hasn't been properly uploaded to the internet, which is a good thing. Since the Japanese use a different form of measurement (which is why Japanese women with G-cups are barely DDD-cups in the US), it skews the perception of how tall the characters are actually meant to be. Think of the /a/ memes about Vegeta and Astalfo, for example.

I'm not trying to fuck with you, Gourry is supposed to be 6'2" to 6'3", Naga is 6-foot-flat, Zelgadis is 5'9" to 5'10", Amelia is 5-foot-flat, and Lina is 4'10".

>Was really popular in the 1990s
>"WHY DON'T ZOOMERS KNOW ABOUT IT"
The answer is kind of staring you in the face.
I think the issue with The Slayers, in particular, is the lack of reach it had in the West (Burgerland).
There were multiple attempts at bringing it to a mass audience, only for it to end up on a specialty channel that's exclusive to Comcast customers.

But there's nothing special about The Slayer's case. Do you know how many anime franchises that were hyper popular in the 90s, only for it to become irrelevant by the next decade? Tenchi Muyo series, which was arguably bigger than The Slayers, suffered the same fate too.

We will soon see franchises like Konosuba and Re:Zero fall into obscurity by the end of this decade if their respective studios fail to make an effort to keep them alive.
Or maybe not, who knows. The userbase on /a/ has largely stagnated since the mid 2010's, so the aging zoomers who grew up with those franchises will still make threads about them in another 10 years or so.

She had already been girl Ranma, and in the same year that Slayers started she had another role that you may be familiar with.

The USA version of Macross, Robotech, basically created the otaku/anime fandom in America, with people going to Japan to record VHS of airing anime and bring the tapes back to distribuite fansubs
Bubblegum Crisis was one of those "sacred cow" of USA otakudom, being the first high profile fansub with a far reach without ufficial distribution, so much so that its popularity convinced AnimEigo to acquire the licence
In the '90s Ranma 1/2 was so big that it basically created anime fanfiction and fansites in the USA; it's insane how HUGE Ranma was
And nowadays if you weren't around back then those anime are basically unknown to the public at large

If I'm not mistaken, the anime artists wanted Amelia to be "cuter" than Lina, so they consistently draw Amelia shorter than Lina even though Lina is supposed to be Womanlette Supreme.

Those formative franchises from the 80s are scratching the surface too.
Just think about how many Japanese boomers are lamenting that popular anime they grew up with in 70s are lost to the annals of time.
