To be fair, the first two Rebuilds actually were bad unimaginative cash-ins. It only came into it's own with the latter two movies, which are both amazing in their own right and as expansions of Evangelion, but it's not hard to see why they have a bad rep when the first movie is literally just an uglier worse version of the show.

Imagine how things would be if they did manage to make that live action Evangelion 20 years ago

They are a downgrade in terms of artistry but most people can accept that because unless you’re a hardcore anime critic into doing media analysis the production artistry is less important than the giant robot and kaiju action.
