Those are just pickup artists, and yes, very aggressive ones as portrayed here (and even more so) definitely exist in certain parts of cities. As for them doing it in broad daylight in eyesight of authorities, no. They mostly keep it to nighttime in shitty parts of town and/or areas known for nightlife and hookups.

Yes, several streamers have mentioned that they get hit on and even grabbed by those guys, some of them on video.
Although, apperantly in a lot of cases its just so they can take them to turist traps where they can scam them off money.
Other times they are scouting them to work in those bars where they scam other simps for money or some shady "model" or "idol" photo shoot.

No, meeting someone in the bar isn't anywhere near the same thing. It probably won't lead to marriage, but there's often conversation happening and that lends to longer relationships developing, or at least multiple hookups. Picking up on the street is almost solely about the short-term conquest, succeeding in the pickup and getting a number, or even a quickie.

I've always just assumed that the average Japanese beta male is kind of pathetic, and thinks this is what basic flirting is.

But only in japanese media I see this happening with two or more guys trying to get the same girl at the same time.
No matter how you see it, it feels rapey/threatening when it's 2 or more dudes.
And funnily enough, even a girl that would usually say yes to 1 attractive guy approaching her would feel weirded out about two guys doing the same.

It's pack hunting behavior, they'll gang up on a girl and pressure her. You'd think it wouldn't work, but you'd be surprised how easily some Japs will capitulate to pressure. Them getting physical is also a very documented thing, also as a pressuring tactic. When you've grown up in and are a part of a society that functions on more of a collective level than an individual one, you'd probably find yourself more susceptible to manipulation. And yes, this nanpa bullshit is seen as a negative thing by most people over there, especially women, to the point where police are cracking down on it in areas where it gets bad enough. You have to understand that these people are conditioned from an early age by family and school to wholly capitulate to their superiors, to the point where it's subconsciously ingrained. While not every girl is going to go along with a guy/group of guys pressuring and manipulating them, you'd be surprised at the number who get worked over by these tactics.

To further add to this, there's also a component where Japs tend to be very conflict avoidant, and these guys will use that in their pressuring tactics. Think about a skilled but sleazy salesman somehow pressuring you into buying something. If it's ever happened to you, you know what I'm talking about, it's like you've been hypnotized and you don't know why exactly you went through with the purchase.

That's exactly why they do it. It's an implicit threat that if the woman they approach doesn't accept, things could get a lot worse for her. Lose-lose scenario (coerced sex or rape/possibly grievous injury) = high pressure = accepting what feels like the lesser evil. This happens all the time and most PUA tactics are designed to invoke this pressure in some way.
It's especially effective in places like Japan or East Asia in general where causing a scene is veroboten.
