Why wasn't it more popular?
It was based and redpilled.
Kino even.
I often find myself telling others to believe in the heart of the cards IRL

But why doesn't /a/ ever talk about it
We have constant DBZ threads and pokegirls threads on /h/ but no one ever talks about Yu-Gi-Oh despite it honestly mogging all of them, even Naruto.
Why is it so underrated out of all of the other franchises?

"Not discussed" doesn't mean it's underrated. 4chan discussions are mostly about polarizing topics. OG Yu-Gi-Oh must not really be polarizing, and no more new content for the original series is coming out either.

it could've been a more popular franchise (though i insist it's hard for anything to be more popular than Yugioh, let alone reach the likes of pokemon or mario or whatever), but they probably made some shitty marketing choices along the way
the card game got kinda convoluted and hard to get into, the anime and manga ended, taking with it all the iconic characters and monsters, and the sequels never had the same pull, probably because Kaz got less involved over time.

5D's ended up becoming the 3rd most discussed anime this year on jap social media despite its age, and the event was only a free streamed re-airing. The way media and fandoms have fractured into smaller and separated sections compared to 10 years ago will stop the chances of new things becoming as big, but for a sequel series that's a much stronger pull than what other shounen have managed besides the really popular ones

Anonymous No.281559364 [Report] >>281561128
>>281558589
To me the response was a small sign of hope. DM manga was the best overall story, but the 5D's anime for part 1 had the most competent pacing, soundtrack, and duels as a Yugioh or general card game anime. The simplicity of having decent pacing no matter whatever the actual subject is tends to be underestimated by many who don't bother to stop and think about it. It showed that sometimes corps and production committees can't brute force their trendy new show to be popular and talked about even when up against an old anime that had crudeness and several flaws, but also some genuine staff passion in it underneath the card shilling. An anime that wasn't even considered among the best or particularly polished during its era

Yugioh's popular because of the card game in
any international context. It's not a spastic action series like dragon ball, naruto, or bleach or any other number of shonen jump series. it doesn't have heavy romance or thrills or epic robot fights or tons of fan service or anything like that. It has way too much thinking and focus on mild dramatics with very simple action sequences. And Kaz's story writing is not capable of pulling in the giant international audiences. Kaz's focus on games, restrained interactions, and symbolism is not the key to international popularity.
>>281558192
>>281559364
Even when stuff like 5d's gets a rise in attention in japan, it doesn't mean anything on an international stage. Yugioh is simply too mild for western audiences to really care or think of it as anything other than a mid tier toy/card commercial.
Anonymous No.281561252 [Report] >>281561333
>>281561128
Not sure why this has to be explained to anyone though. Yugioh really doesn't feel like all those other long running anime except the fact that it's poorly paced a lot of time.
Anonymous No.281561327 [Report]
What do you mean more popular? The card game is practically one of the biggest names in TCG, and it isn't going away any time soon. And there's already plenty of franchising being done with the series.

If you want to blame anyone for it not being bigger blame Konami for half assing any opportunities they get. Take this for example, they have more than enough material behind plenty of deck archetypes to pump out an entire season of anime with plenty of fans who would be behind watching and buying merch of it, and instead they put out some animated shorts instead thinking this is what the fans want.

>The story isn't anything to write home about afaik aside from Kaiba's autism
The story is solid (especially for a TCG anime), it's about ancient Egypt wizards summoning spirits to do battle while dealing with the consequences of slaughtering like 100 thieves to make cursed gold instruments for morally gray reasons. It's not very conducive for shitposting and discussions, though, unless someone is dumping it. Also a lot of the cool stuff lies in the art and how much of a Chad Kaz was.
