This would be a lot better if either Hikaru-Daemon were a rapechad and far better looking or it was far more about the complex feelings of the protagonist who on one level hated the daemon that killed his best friend but also because the latter absorbed said best friend's personality and was so much like him didn't want to lose his best friend again.

But now it's just boring and their relationship is so uncompelling and weird

Even chapter 2 in the series spells out that real Hikaru had feelings for Yoshiki, but it gets swept under the rug after volume 1 when "Hikaru" suddenly stops his gay behavior and reminds us constantly of how asexual he is and real Hikaru gets revealed as 100% straight.

I'm watching a real horror atm (won't say which because /a/ will spoil me) and it's making me realize what Hikaru is missing

I'm not at the last episode yet. Even if the last episode actually gets to that point, that he just accepted it like it was only a minor deal before with no real issue still makes it feel far too surreal and weird.
Especially that scene where he just stuck his hand into his chest like it was no big deal and moved around in it, who does that?

Most important, the fact that the daemon did not kill Hikaru but found his dying corpse that was already about to die is just a missed opportunity. It would be far more interesting if he actually consumed a fully living Hikaru and gained his memories and parts of his personality in the process and inherited his love for Yosiki and realized how sad he made the latter by killing his best friend rather than this:

The central concept that he's not Hikaru but has all his memories and is very much influenced by the latter's personality is a very interesting concept that's wasted. In no small part because Hikaru basically died before the title started and the minor amount of flashbacks are from when Hikaru was still a child. It would be far more interesting if he maybe killed Hikaru half way through the first episode who was actually screaming and begged for his life.

This title would just have been better if the actual Hikaru were featured up till at least half the first episode. THen got killed by the daemon in a brutal way in front of Yosiki who ran away traumatized and somehow, the next morning, someone looking and acting like Hikaru arrives at his doorstep and tearfully apologizes for what he did and from there on starts their complicated relationship with Yosiki being like:
