I thought it never did great there, only decently enough to not be axed. The manga is really bad when it comes to exposition about world-building which is why most people dropped it in the beginning, I was hoping the anime would have made it flow more organically kinda like how the Attack on Titan WIT adaptation managed to make most of the boring expositions mor interesting, but the anime has so far been extremely faithful.
The manga does improve a lot once it stops being as exposition heavy letting the characters shine more but it's the type of manga that's basically made to stay niche, I really feel that most people that were expecting this to become "The Next Big Thing" were /wsj/ falesflaggers, and it honestly could have if it had released later because right now most of the WSJ magazine are worse than Gachiakuta.
But ultimately the best shounen manga that are currently releasing, excluding the long running ones like One Piece, Conan and Hajime no Ippo, come from either Sunday or Square Enix.
