Reminder that crazy faces are not a substitute for good character.
Part of what makes GTO so good is that Onizuka is an amazing character, and he's further enhanced by his expressiveness.
Constantly making boring characters pull silly faces does not adequately compensate for poor quality character.

They can contribute, but a good character can't be exclusively defined by them.
Onizuka is defined by his actions first, expressions second. He has a clear goal, a strong set of principles and always does whatever it takes for his students.
Meanwhile in something like Grand Blue le whacky faces are overused to compensate for lack of real character.

The anime did it pretty sparingly, like once every few episodes. I can neither confirm or deny the frequency of this in the manga. It would be annoying if it were every chapter right?

The manga knows how to handle these kinds of things, it has a great sense of comedy. Very competent. Shame about the author getting lazy nowadays

onizuka's retarded face is an unfunny forced joke, but trying to prop up kanojo as the face of the modern manga industry is a far more egregious sin.
