Dear Flowers That Bloom in Days of Yore
Right on time, it's Kasumi yuri chapter 9.

This bit really got me thinking about Igarashi's last manga, Dominant. And I want to talk about it but where do I even start.
Both protags, Seika and Etsurou thought their love was a harmful or disgusting thing and struggled to rationalize it. It's a theme Igarashi's into: twisted love most of Dominant's characters had a degree of. Seika because Etsurou had a girlfriend, Etsurou because of a mountain of trauma like Kasumi, and they both collapse under unwarranted guilt.

Igarashi did say she considers Kasumi to be in the same "role" as Etsurou, and I can see it. Broken by a traumatic past he falls into a strange relationship as a way to escape his guilt. Like Dominant, Haruyo is as naive as Seika about Etsurou's problems until she gets punched in the face by her teacher. But unlike Dominant, Kasumi has nothing but supportive people around her. So while I think she's in for pain I don't think AriSaku will be nearly as dark in the end.

It hurt seeing what Etsurou went through. A childhood of physical abuse that left him a broken people pleaser, a series of being taken advantage of, finding a semi-healthy relationship that turns full yandere after he gets fucking date raped which causes his rich girlfriend to lock him in a cottage for 5 years routinely breaking his legs so the pain is a reminder of her love while she gaslights him and plays on his trauma to keep him wholly dependent on her and in the end Etsurou abandons Seika because he's afraid his love would only damage her.
If Dominant were a 100% yuri manga it would be a certified /u/ classic.

As much as I liked Dominant (I'm not militant but, given I have a lifetime's worth of straight romance fiction burnout, it means something the male MC was my favorite) I doubt I could find the motivation. It's not as relevant as Shi ni Aruki or Sylph's twitter version were, and given I've just gotten over a year long slump I don't want to bog myself down. I also like my yuri only rule. And I have other things to work on.
Igarashi's drawn a few little crossovers though.

Let's open this can of worms because where else are we going to have the chance to do so?

I was an OG Komakofag but (wo)man did the ending feel like such a whiff. I realize there was edgy foreshadowing from chapter 1 with everyone's corpses but there's a level between that and and a battle of "wits" between two unrepentant school shooters. It feels rather odd to introduce main villains that late into the story when it doesn't begin that way, especially when it clashes with the theme of the story. I don't take issue with Happy Sugar Life-tier casual sociopathy, but that's something you need to set up expectations for off the bat.

What's worse is that Komako gets functionally deleted from the story because the author didn't have another way to maintain her secrecy which killed momentum for the ship as well. I sympathize with Akirafags because she filled the void which laid the grounds for the shipping war(?) while she was actively engaged with the story, carrying it until the author hospitalized her because reasons. If the story was annoying before that, it became downright unbearable at then and there. I think we all felt this panel spiritually.

Which brings us to that secret of Komako's that has been procrastinated for the entire run. Are we seriously meant to believe that her presence is a causal factor that attracts the black? Surely it's simply another flavor of Satsuki's death perception. There were some who interpreted the ending as "I'll prevent all the deaths you cause by existing" when surely it's meant to just be a matter of the two of them covering each others' blind spots. Komako can see individuals who might die in places where Satsuki can't see, and can see before 24 hours and monitor the temporal progression, while Satsuki can deduce specific details about the location and mode of death.

Dropped my image.

Also, Komako being nice because she abets those who have no allies is pretty fucking weak. Sensei was taking the angle of despite everything Search Engine Optimization did not deserve to die and needed social connections as she was still human, but using Komako for that angle was incredibly weak. There is a very straightforward way to whitewash that kind of sociopathy: make it yuri. Give the villain a partner whose demons can dance with theirs and have them be equally unrepentant and reprehensible. The whole memory loss thing was a weak ass scheme too. You can make pure, for teh evlulz-type villains entertaining in a number of ways, but Search Engine Optimization had none of them.

I'm confident Ryoko had a plot outline day 1 of the beginning and end that revolved around Komachi. But as the manga went on it became difficult to incorporate Komachi in subplots because she's such a maniac, so she lost relevance and abruptly gained it all back when Ryoko made a hard turn to the original course. This was a common issue in general, arcs writing out half the cast sometimes without much justification to keep it more of a closed room mystery. You could feel it with Akira too.

I didn't have a problem with Prez on paper but he became too repetitive. I actually loved his dynamic where deep down he was desperate to convince himself he wasn't evil, chasing Satsuki's validation, meanwhile Sayo was unconsciously pushing him to kill because she's the real psycho. It would have been more interesting if he died sooner and an unhinged Sayo took his place, even without death vision. Seo was a wash but the twist she set up Michiru to kill Miho was so cool. Again, would have been nice if Prez realized his fuckup there. Seo's plan to hide a murder behind her own death condition was also a great use of powers that I think some readers failed to understand so it could have been explained better. There were a few moments like that where Ryoko dipped into complex mechanics without spending enough time on them. I agree making it yuri always makes it better, but Seo would have been improved making her memories more jumbled. It was hinted she was suicidal before. There must have been more nuance originally. She could have been struggling to make sense of herself and ended up a more tragic Miho.

The manga was at its best when it was a clash of reasonable ideologies. As much as I'm an Akirafag, Miho was my favorite character and 4 my favorite volume. It was so satisfying seeing the bitchy bully not only never get comeuppance but actually have the protagonist admit she was right about most things.

And that Miho was the most perceptive, solving Satsuki's mystery on her own. Miho was treated with the kind of respect you never see in her archetype. Her banter with Satsuki was perfect.

On Akira, of course it's insane how hard she got baited only to be written out. Especially when it was her deaths that made Satsuki both lose all hope and get it all back. But I think the point of no return for the manga was when her dad's subplot resolved itself in a single chapter. That threat was looming for so long and while it had impact it was treated with all the care of tying up a loose end. Remember how Prez offered to kill Akira's dad if she turned on Satsuki? Wouldn't that have been a much more interesting plotline? But maybe Ryoko realized Akira was winning the Satsukibowl hard and needed to bench her.

I do like Satsuki x Komachi too. Especially Komachi's morbidly playful attitude at the end when she felt comfortable to be herself. But the critical issue with the ending is how unearned it felt. I can accept Komachi being a death magnet, there were clues even without the Shi ni Aruki connection. But Satsuki makes a lofty promise to stop anyone from dying around her, Komachi accepts, and then... happily ever after? Test that. Show Satsuki struggling. Show Komachi actually helping, starting to have real hope, only to have it crushed. Show her forced to accept this choice means people will die. One more big death fiesta at school. Kill one of her friends. Kill Akira even, the ultimate price for her choice. There just wasn't a final test of Satsuki's convictions. The ultimate issue isn't Komachi sweeping out of nowhere, it's being a total anticlimax in doing so. Most of the final volume is Komachi flashbacks and she gets the final chapter (pre-extras) to herself. Just unstructured and incomplete.

Ultimately Liar Satsuki had tons of potential, made good on it for a long stretch, and fumbled hard at the end. It was still a good read but I don't think back on it as fondly as I maybe should. The deaths were always inventive, the characters had strong personalities, Satsuki was a lovably engaging protagonist. It just needed an editor to really crack the whip.

Prez's mistake was showing Sayo the teacher's death. Sayo didn't need to know that he set it up for her to be saved. But he had always needed validation that his actions were righteous so he did. And of course Sayo will forever approve of his actions because that's the only thing that saved her from hell.

It honestly felt like the author was spinning his wheels for a while after getting the green light for a longer series without fear of axe, wrote himself into a corner, then got burnt out and rushed out the ending to be done with it. Burnout is the only way I can rationalize that ending.

I think the larger issue is that the first chapter foreshadows the main "villain" so to speak as something supernatural and intangible. Assuming Komako was actually a cursed child attracting some Final Destination-tier Rube Goldberg fatalities, navigating through that would have made for a much juicer meat of the story. Replacing that with the dueling villains was much cheaper by comparison. Sure there was the element of the supernatural in that the boy also had death perception, but if I recall we never saw how his version worked in contrast to Satsuki's. He was never really even framed as a pawn of that impending fate anyways, just a guy with a Yagami Light complex.

That "clash of reasonable ideologies" never really happened. And again, the ideological angle isn't really something an impersonal force of death should have. Of course, that assumes that such a thing was meant to be the main source of conflict in the first place. If not, and it was really meant to be Satsuki versus her murderous classmates, then that has to be setup from the beginning. There's a big leap between being a high school bully and a fucking terrorist; it needs narrative buildup.

The hetboy didn't even get proper comeuppance. Sure, he died, but "you should have killed me sooner" is the wrong note for that plot line to end on. He needed to fuck up in a way such that he kills someone and makes everything worse as a result. Or if he was truly meant to be a martyr as opposed to a villain, then again, he needed to have real, tangible threats to deal with from the start.

Alternatively, a good chunk of the story could have been about the hetfags trying to kill Komako because of the perception, whether real or otherwise, that her existence causes death. That would have made a much more compelling conflict. Again if Search Engine Optimization is in the mix, give her a partner, who can also see death, that for reasons the both of them bond romantically over murdering their classmates.

The pros and cons of Komako are exactly as you say. Again, it doesn't matter whether or not she's the causal factor in the deaths around her, only the perception of that needs to exist, but the conflict needed to be satisfyingly resolved. I didn't have any strong feelings for Miho; she wasn't terribly written but I don't care for mesugaki-types.

Before Prez died he should have
>realized he killed an innocent girl in Michiru
>admitted he was worse than everyone he targeted
>been exposed for at least one murder to the whole school
His perspective needed to be crushed and reputation ruined, then Sayo spiral into an unrepentant murderer as a twist of the knife. The serial killer in Shi ni Aruki at least had that moment of his worldview crashing down after Tokiko fucked him up Rube Goldberg style. I agree Kai got off way too lightly. But I just can't hate the Wiley Coyote speech vs fists conflict with Satsuki. And yeah it's hard to keep up a rational debate over ethics when one side's going completely killcrazy, even if a character like that maybe should exist short-term so Satsuki can have her "should I kill the Joker to protect Gotham" moment.

There was definitely something behind the scenes, with the 3 month hiatus before the last 20 chapters. But even with burnout I think the original ending would have still tied into chapter 1's mass death. Ryoko seemed to consciously reject some themes of the manga, whether in an attempt to not remake Shi ni Aruki or plain out of attachment to the characters. There's a shockingly low death count in the end and that just doesn't fit with 80 chapters of tension spinning plates that always seem about to crash.

On a tangent, I've noticed some saying Aizawa-san fills the void of Liar Satsuki and I guess I can see that. Especially in Sayaka, who has a similar personal conflict to Satsuki: protecting others from hidden supernatural dangers while trashing her own reputation. But (in my authoritative opinion) Aizawa is much more purposeful with each development raising 2 questions for every 1 it answers while still forming an enticingly murky outline of a sprawling series of events. Most of Satsuki is self-contained 'death of the week' where the real conflict lies in Satsuki's perspective coming into question with each new girl added to the harem.

In other words, Satsuki's conflict is ideological, Aizawa's is deductive. Which is in large part why Satsuki's ending fell flat: it solved the mystery but no one was reading for the overarching mystery. They wanted to see how Satsuki would personally reconcile inevitable disaster. It might sound strange but I don't even consider mystery to be in the top 3 genres on display in Satsuki (thriller, horror, yuri). So I can see Dorothy's plan unfolding each month but never got that sense with Ryoko. And when the thriller comes to a gentle stop before the peak of the rollercoaster, the horror is assuaged with a few kind words, and the yuri is eternal roommates territory - meanwhile the mystery needs to flashback dump to make up for 50 chapters of neglect - it's going to be disappointing.

Especially when the final villains' ideologies boil down to "murder is cool actually." And Satsuki's perspective can't really be questioned when half her harem is absent each arc, because as you said the manga is prolonging developments to the point some girls need to be put in plot jail. It all comes down to structural issues I could have handwaved with a bombastic (and gay) finish but instead the manga got pulled over and we were all ordered to go home.

Prez couldn't be ruined in the final arc, because the purpose of it was to set him as right all along, breaking Satsuki's moral high ground. Same with Sayo choosing to help over revenge - in the end they weren't that evil, so maybe Satsuki wasn't that good.
Which later leads to the resolution with Komachi - it might be better for everyone if she was dead, but Satsuki doesn't want that. Komachi saved Satsuki, so Satsuki doesn't regret saving her, even if it's selfish.

I think Satsuki was conceptualized as a "good end" for Shi ni Aruki - what Tokiko craved most was human connection, not some philosophical ideas about how "death is good, actually"

Hey I can be more objective than that. I might be biased towards tomboy archetypes but Miho has more facets that play off the rest of the cast in interesting ways. Miho's arc post-confessing to Satsuki (no homo) felt like it opened a closed room and widened the conflicts from just the weirdos to the whole school in a way I wish the rest of the manga kept exploring. Satsuki vs Prez could have been a real school-wide issue. Instead things stayed isolated. Granted that's just my preference and I'm not saying Ryoko was wrong to have a different vision there. But sometimes the manga had to bend over backwards to limit the scale, especially after Sensei got involved and Satsuki had an authority figure on her side.

>>281607603
That's true, and I do agree no ending would have satisfied besides Satsuki/Komachi earning those human connections. But not so much "death being good," I think Satsuki needed to accept the inevitability of death to overcome her trauma. She said so in her promise to Komachi, that if the time came she failed to save someone she'd be ready and forgive Komachi. I think the deeper question is if Satsuki would forgive herself. That's the kind of conflict I wanted out of the finale.
Okay yes saving Seo resulting in Kai's death is basically that, but it's too irredeemable, out of order, and Satsuki never recognized the consequences until it was too late. I want a life or death choice framed not as Satsuki choosing who dies but taking comfort in who lived.

Well Masaki has been the focus of the last 7 chapters.
Honda is Michi's twintail friend who's big into DeLphinus and Aizawa.
Masaki is Honda's childhood friend who almost made it into DeLphinus because Honda pushed her to be an idol.
Masaki is big into Michi now partly to hurt Honda by driving her and Michi apart but also had a crush on Honda in the past.
The last few chapters have been very straightforward but I think only because we're deep in the explanation phase of a subplot. The volume should have ~2 more chapters left and I expect shit to get wild again. Specifically this nurse's office affair seems as bad for the status quo as the concert. Michi can't deny her friends are gay for her and Michi's going to recognize Aizawa's possessing Kasumi, which will likely have heavier consequences this time. Personally I'm holding out for Aizawa getting stuck in Kasumi (since Kasumi's hole is getting harder to escape) so someone is forced to interact with her.
I'm tooling with the character chart for vol5 but apart from Masaki there aren't many major changes.
