Also, having a high conviction isn't even necessarily a bad thing. A low one means you are arresting and charging a bunch of probably innocent people. Considering the process is often the punishment, that would be pretty horrible.

While it was a tiny part of the arc, Yamato taking a bath with the guys despite being a biological female is obvious social commentary and you have to be willfully obtuse to pretend it wasn't. Especially since the manga has in the past treated the idea of crossdressing and wanting to be the other gender as a joke, but didn't make any jokes at Yamato's expense. Obviously the whole arc has way, way bigger issues than that, but it's still valid point of criticism.

Most of his crimes (all the assaults and drug use) weren't even prosecuted.

Sure that's a joke, but it's not at Yamato's expense. The comedy comes from Sanji's reaction, not because Yamato bathing with the guys was inherently ridiculous or absurd. There was also the femboy samurai retainer who took a bath with the women and from what I remember there was no joke there. Compare that to earlier depictions in the manga where okama were depicted as brutish men with 5 o'clock shadow and hairy legs traipsing around in dresses pretending to be women, which was treated as comical in and of itself. It's a pretty massive departure, and again, it's disingenuous to suggest there isn't a social message presented in the bath scene.

That's largely what okama ARE, anon. Oda has okama friends, it's why he made them such a major part of the manga. Ivankov was even based specifically on a personal friend of his with the intent of him playing the character in the anime (which he did until he posted a dick pic online and got canceled).
