Are you still going to watch anime at 30? 40? 50? What's the right age to stop and move on?

I base my whole career, life and collection off of supporting/promoting anime and manga and don't see any reason why this should stop, or why I should switch hobbies and invest in something else. (even into old age)

I stopped at 30. Anime got boring because the majority of content is made for otaku or kids and ends up feeling very philosphically dichotomal or template in its deployment of tropes to anchor narrative. There are no surprising works and even vaguely profund or auteur works end up spiriling back to isekai or high school as a basis.

I get why so many people in the community are autistic, it's not just that the content is animated but also that the narrative weight, structure and characterisation can almost always be reduced to predictable beats.

Though it was really put into perspective when I watched the Sopranos recently. Mass tv sure but the emotional and philosophical gulf between the sneedpranos and like 99% of anime is pretty disheartening. Even something like GITS or Eva falls short in terms of comparative characterisation. So it was just depressing to realise there's an insurmountable gap between the works of american white piggus and the humble JP otaku.

idk, i read a LOT of manga tho. Easy to fit in between sets/commute and anything is possible in manga. You don't have to worry about the reading comprehension of 18yo shut ins, you can just pen whatever weird psych thriller comes to mind and publish it.

Paying for anime is pointless, because unless you're a billionaire, your meager contributions will not affect the industry. The industry will follow zoomers and they will inevitably lead the hobby to its death.

I’m 50 and while I do still watch anime it’s only very occasionally now as the huge majority of content for around a decade now is of no interest to me. Even going back 15 years most anime was bad but at least there was a good show every season. What is considered “good” now is trash by the standards of the 90s. That’s NOT to say the 90s was filled with greats, BUT there WERE greats. I got into anime in the tail end of the golden age (early 90s, lots of 80s subs at the local anime club), and back then you had to be selective in what you consumed because the only way to do it was via VHS collecting which was a slow and expensive process. I had over 200 tapes, and there wasn’t a single garbage anime among them. I don’t know if I’d be into anime at all if I was growing up in today’s generation.

Nah, I dig you. When there's a higher cost for engagement, you have to be more selective because you're paying with limited resources. I guess as well in the 90s, the industry was still dominated by people who were inspired by Dezaki/Matsumoto/Tezuka

Yes, true. I should have clarified I mainly collect manga. You can't really collect anime except as DVDs and Blu-Rays (& no one still uses that disc shit! Techfags are smart and knew that discs deteriorate over time and only have a finite lifespan, this is literally the exact reason why Gaben made Steam)

42 and still watching, no reason to stop. Got into anime in early 2000s because I needed some sort of social hobby (internet wasn't that good and you had to go and meet people) and a lot of girls were into it. My wife is one of them and she's bigger weeb than myself.

Anime is, like most things reasonably called a guilty pleasure, is only a guilty pleasure if you really can't articulate why you like the stuff you like around your friends and family. You shouldn't actually feel stress hiding your power level unless you're jerking it to stuff non-normies would have to check up to see if it's illegal or not by this point in 2025. Seriously, most people who enjoy conventional hobbies now who take it seriously, with the ease of access to information, now can come across as 'nerdy' if they're simply passionate about it, like listening to anyone talk about baseball statistics, music genres, or outdoor sports technicals.

Throwing out both Mushishi and The Ancient Magus' Bride as possible long-form stuff, also outside the usual lists if you think she's interested in 'east asian court politics' as a genre, Yatagarasu and the Raven of the Inner Palace would both be solid picks.
