I stopped at 30. Anime got boring because the majority of content is made for otaku or kids and ends up feeling very philosphically dichotomal or template in its deployment of tropes to anchor narrative. There are no surprising works and even vaguely profund or auteur works end up spiriling back to isekai or high school as a basis.
I get why so many people in the community are autistic, it's not just that the content is animated but also that the narrative weight, structure and characterisation can almost always be reduced to predictable beats.
Though it was really put into perspective when I watched the Sopranos recently. Mass tv sure but the emotional and philosophical gulf between the sneedpranos and like 99% of anime is pretty disheartening. Even something like GITS or Eva falls short in terms of comparative characterisation. So it was just depressing to realise there's an insurmountable gap between the works of american white piggus and the humble JP otaku.
idk, i read a LOT of manga tho. Easy to fit in between sets/commute and anything is possible in manga. You don't have to worry about the reading comprehension of 18yo shut ins, you can just pen whatever weird psych thriller comes to mind and publish it.
