Isekai is fun. I've been watching all of the seasonals this year and am having a great time. I want to jump into the isekai LN/WN rabbit hole but I don't know where to start.

We both know that even if you skimmed the crap, isekai only encourage the laziest writing in the world

>don't bother writing character, just self insert
>don't bother writing backstory or a story, just make shit up on the go
>don't bother writing a consistent setting
>use your one twist as the excuse for writing isekai shit

Even fanfiction require more skills than isekai because the writer at least tried to understand what tropes the source material was built around.

Probably the timing and accessibility of the WN and its translation being stuck just a bit before the ending for years, likewise with the manga not being scanlated for years and only getting low-quality page scans with MTL-tier translations until someone finally picked it up properly again without covering the MTL-ed chapters. And there was no fanTL of the LN for the first few volumes either.
All this made it a terrible experience for the "just give me a link that has everything" crowd and the anime alone wasn't enough to carry it for the /a/udience.
So overall: extremely bad luck.

It sucks because isekai with an actual character would be great
>actual unstable suicidal schizoneet gets in and has to be tard wrangled into not killing himself and the entire continent while also fighting the enemy
>disbeliever reincarnates and becomes increasingly distressed at not waking up, culminating in a mental break where she kills someone. Keeps doubling down on this not being real because she can't accept she fucking murdered someone
It is an incredibly versatile genre but they just keep mass producing the same story with slightly different flavor of demigods. It's genuinely braindead factory slop.

>they say dubs are shit, they're sometimes better than the original voices
>they say isekai is shit, it's actually kino sometimes
>they say that buu is better than kid buu, kid buu actually runs circles around him
>they say naruto is good, it's actually plagiarized off of other manga published in the same magazine

More specifically, the plot device of isekai tensei, that is reincarnation into another world, is so ubiquitous in the isekai genre that foreign observers might mistake it for being the defining element of the genre, even though there exists portal isekai, reverse isekai, and pure native isekai

It has potential. There is so much more to do with it. The initial premise is a powerful promise of a novel experience, but it’s been mostly squandered and now dickheads just follow the same formula and put every character into the same world.

As much as I don't dismiss that it can/could be good
Your example don't address one of the big problem with isekai, the very setting itself is a weakness.

Even if you wrote a great memorable character, it would constantly be operating in a setting that feel fake as fuck and would drive anyone insane.
Which by the way, make Fraken Fran take on isekai a masterpiece.
Anonymous No.281597102
>>281596931
That's not really an isekai problem but more of a general laziness/slop problem. There's no intrinsic reason isekai worlds have to be generic and flat; it's just that they haven't bothered to do any actual worldbuilding.
Anonymous No.281597641 >>281604961
One of the most important things about isekai is that growth in power is actually persistent and not just a routine that happens in every arc to fit the scaled-up antagonist of the new arc that always starts out stronger than the MC. I think the author of Heroine Survival is on point on this matter in the afterword of LN vol. 5:
>I know this may be just me, but I’ve always hated shounen manga arcs where the protagonist, having grown stronger, suddenly becomes weak and helpless all over again. Like, what was the point of their growth, then? I can’t stand that kind of thing.

The strength of generic fantasy is that there is nothing unique about it, You understand it like the back of your hand and can build from there.
The term to filter fantasy from Fantasy is 'isekai'. No creative setting will be tagged isekai even if there's isekai in it. The isekai tag is like a juden star for the factory shit or its "subversions". It is absolutely guaranteed to never be interesting.
You could say it's a solved genre, and it's only being produced because of constant demand from the dementia ward. If you want something legitimately Fantastical, I found chinese stuff is pretty out there

It's dogshit. Instead of expanding upon the premise and having the character grow like The Blob, eventually gaining shoggoth abilities, they turned him into an anime protagonist.

Also the artist for this is literally called Mitzvah. That's the only reason you need to never touch it with a ten foot pole.

I've watched death note (about 10-15 times), Ranma 1/2 (incomplete), samurai champloo (~5 times), cowboy bebop (never finished it), the cowboy bebop movie (several times), a bunch of Little witch academy episodes, and Hidamari Sketch. So far.

I was reminded that this manga, written in 1993, is an isekai. It's Shoujo but it's absolutely better than almost every isekai written today. The main heroine hardly brings any of her culture to the new world and instead, actually learns their culture and language. It's surprisingly good.
