What I don't get is the displacement of adventure and fantasy, in their most literal meanings. Officially sanctioned agencies that are "guilds", state-funded magical academies, predictable game-adjacent rulesets. Elves and dwarves and nekos that aren't even distinct enough to be considered different nationalities. Most of shitty stories aren't some autistic exploration of those ideas like "Hero, Dragon, Courier", and rarely an honest slice-of-life in a fantastical setting. Just incredibly sanitized worlds bereft of any real need for heroes. And so the heroes that arise in such dire times are anemic cowards, no different from the regular japanese high school student.
While is*kai is a subject of common mockery, the key problem is how the protagonist of such pulpy stories has largely stopped being a man of action. I do think "things just sorta happen around the hero" is an easier way to write a gorillion-volume-long ranobe. But pursuing a clear tangible goal is like the definition of "quest", you can't get away from that when everything else is so stuck in the trappings of fantasy. It's not as if shonen isn't full of teens rising up to the cruel and violent occasion.

It depends on what kind of isekai story it is.
I genuinely love overpowered characters and power fantasies, because they are relatable to me.
I am IRL a genius with 150 IQ and insane creativity and I am literally getting paid for solving problems only I can solve and constantly praised. Also people often praise me to heaven, saying things which are not humble at all.
I still watch anime sometimes when I have time or I am tired.

Characters I can totally relate to are Shiba Tatsuya or Monika the silent witch.
Because genuinely I too am a genius magician. Their story does not need to deal with them struggling to gain recognition or against obstacles, because it is a given that they will win.
Their struggle is with how they square having all that competence and status and yet they are actually still just human. No one really understands them despite all their success.

Then there are the slow life protagonists, to them I can not really relate because they have no drive and no passion.

The protagonist just wins constantly and is successful and is rewarded for his efforts. It gets boring at some point but I don’t find it offensive at all.

I would indeed say that's quite different because of the element of control. You're not merely experiencing the story but affecting it, often from a first person perspective. That does afford identifying with the protagonist directly. I wonder if part of it is just standards getting higher as more stories get churned out. It isn't enough to just be the hero who slays the dragon and gets the princess anymore. People hate it when MC's struggle and/or show weakness, they just want their self insert to be competent and strong from the beginning. The hero just getting with a single princess is "boring and bland" now, they want a harem bare minimum, full of powerful exotic women like Dragongirls, Elven Queens, Sword Masters, etc. The hero can't have the spotlight shining off him for even a minute, so every side character has to be either incompetent or a scapegoat villain designed to make the MC look like a moral paragon by comparison. And even then, the crazy part is that all of this is just a drop in the bucket compared to gacha games, which take all these tricks and amp them up tenfold to convince players to gamble on them.
