This movie is literally just Evangelion episode 6 stretched out to 2 hours
It even has the same music used multiple times

It's interesting how underwhelming it is in live action.
Instead of batteries of missile launchers and misato in the control room letting her weapons be literally vaporized you have some ugly bad actors on cheap chairs and half a dozen tanks shooting to no effect and giving up.

I think they're both good with different narratives. Minus one is focused on the main character and his personal and mental issues. Shin has a much wider scope and is focused more on godzilla himself and the government response. I can appreciate both.

minus one was great in some scenes and pretty retarded in others. final ship fight was super meh, but gojira looked amazing. also the fact that the chick got blasted but ultimately survived was a fucking copout and you know it
shin is pretty nice, but the opening scenes and googly eyes had me wondering if this was a parody or some shit. nuke laser breath was 11/9 kino

shin just looks and sounds so much more interesting, I don't understand how people get bored by the "talking" in shin when every shot is so creatively framed, and godzilla himself feels fucking massive and unsettling with the way he moves and acts
complaining about the talking is also completely missing the point of the movie, I bet they're the same people who bitch about shinji not getting in duh robot

That's always the struggle with godzilla media. How they handle the humans characters. Minus and Shin had different approaches and there isn't a correct way, it's just a matter of personal preference and execution. Sometimes even if it's a big point in the movie, something like parodying government incompetence isn't gonna resonate with an audience as much with showcasing one man's personal issues.

I know because I am Japanese, but there are many films like Minus One in Japan.
I feel those stories are lies to help Japanese people forget the guilt of surviving after the war.
It is probably true that Kamikaze pilots did not really want to die. But they had the strength to overcome their fear of death, which is why they are great.
The reason why the Kamikaze pilots are not portrayed as heroic but as pathetic victims is because the post-war Japanese cannot accept that they betrayed them and surrendered.
The hallmark of Japanese pacifism is the denial of heroism. The pre-war Japanese were not pacifists, so the post-war Japanese are unwilling survivors. People who failed to be heroes deny the existence of heroes because they are self-loathing because of their own weakness.

the brilliance of shin is that literally every moment of the movie is centered around godzilla and the impact he's having on humanity
in minus one he's essentially just a prop, however effective and well utilized he is with the actually competent human drama, but he completely dictates every second of the two hours of shin's runtime, which when you think about it is both incredibly interesting as a movie and also genuinely impressive from a writing standpoint

it along with the way he's depicted really make him feel like an overwhelming force of nature that humanity just cannot deal with, and that's what makes godzilla compelling

minus one has the amazing scale of his literal nuclear blasts but that's undermined when you conveniently have both main characters having dramatic moments right there with godzilla, whereas in shin he just torches all of fucking tokyo and the entire government in seconds with no copouts

The way you worded this post makes it sound like you are disappointed Japan surrendered. There's nothing that Japan could have gained from fighting at that point in the war. It would have been a year or two of a total blockade of the country while Japanese people starved and suffered non-stop bombing. Then they would have been invaded and slowly defeated and occupied. Every city would be rubble. Millions would die for nothing. Japan would still be occupied. There would be no one left to talk about heroism. Japan would still be recovering from the war instead of being the culturally and economically strong country it is.

That's an interesting opinion.

I mean it's a bit like americans and vietnam vets where they shunned them for being baby killers to cope with the fact that those dudes were sent out to fight a pointless war and they blame the soldiers instead of the government. Hell I was even called a baby killer when i was in uniform at a mall back in 2017 by some old ladies who think that war is bad. Yeah I know it is, but what the fuck. You're probably the ones who voted for the people who kept the war going.
It's like Orwell wrote about the pacifists in Spain. Those who abjure violence may do so only because others commit violence on their behalf

breh, reamly?
how is it hard to understand that normies, at least americans, just zone out during conversations? normies literally watch dub shit because they want to 'listen' to the media while they are working and doing other stuff; they don't want to pay attention to the sceeen (they waited for the dub of this movie btw) unless it is action/misery packed, showing those retarded one piece-like flashy "choreographies" or/and has fanservice. any actual serious topic must be met with jokes or else their irony infested normie brains will get tired out. all hollywood movies reflect this.
Shin Godzilla, on the other hand, requires them to pay attention to the consequences of Shin arrival and to the non-circus politics. this movie will absolute filter morons out

>'s just a matter of personal preference and execution
For me Minus One is far too melodramatic and that's the part of the execution that rubbed me the wrong way. It was like watching a soap opera because just as soon as some semblance of happiness could form with the MC's new family some shit would happen almost immediately to trigger his PTSD.

>>281610926
>>US Godzilla are goofy high budget Showa movies
This is what I have to keep explaining to people who don't get Godzilla as a franchise. Because they will watch something like KOTM and think it is doing a bad job and I just treat it like I would Final Wars or 2000 and have a great time. Yeah, those aren't showa either but the franchise has been goofy for longer than most people watching them have been alive.

Strong disagree, I greatly preferred the MC's story in Minus One far more than the whole "red tape falling out of my pockets" stuff in Shin, though it's been a long while since I've seen Shin so I might need to give it a re-watch. Shin's story is very good though from what I remember of it.
Anonymous No.281613840

Yeah, don't get me wrong I can recognize that Minus One and Shin are both good movies at the end of the day. I just really don't like -1's MC nor how the movie relies more on pathos to convey its themes. And I also really liked the greater focus on the Bureaucracy in Shin because it was snappier and honestly just more engaging. When -1 actually got around to planning how to deal with their own Godzilla I think that's when I sat back up in my chair. But Shin was like that from jump with all the cabinet meetings and backroom conferences.

The editing on Shin is top shelf overall. It never lets you rest but it doesn't feel tiring either. By comparison, Minus one is more lethargic and a lot of it felt like watching a daytime television drama. Not in a bad way, but just how it felt.
