The show is very interesting in historical and political context. The producers are of a generation that spent their childhood during the war, and they projected onto Earth the image of the ideal, strong Imperial Japan that they saw from their child's point of view. Gamilas is the image of the bad Imperial Japan they were forced into after the war. The point of the story is that both images are wrong. Earth would have been destroyed without Iskandar's help and Yamato would never have defeated Domel without plot-armour. Gamilas had no choice but to invade space for its own survival.
It was persuasive that Yamato was the first anime made to be enjoyed by adults as well as children. Children of the time would have purely enjoyed watching Yamato defeat Gamilas, while their parents would have felt sympathy for the dying Gamilas because of their wartime experiences.

General Domel is my favourite character.

Space Battleship Yamato is becoming pretty topical. Maybe not the ship itself, but the beliefs and politics are more inspiring then the political beliefs that are causing damage in the present day.

>Gamilas lost four aircraft carriers in the Battle of the Rainbow Cluster
>Japan lost four aircraft carriers in the Battle of Midway
It was surprising how they showed the link between the anime and the real world in a very obvious way

The remake version goes a long way to keep trying to humanize the villains to.

Haven't watched/read Yamato yet but I can see how Captain Harlock instead shows a disillusion towards a more understanding mindset about post war Japan, and yet still loves humanity too much to let it go

The Battle of the Rainbow Cluster tells how helpless the Yamato was in actual history. The plot of the accidental self-destruction of the Domel fleet by drill missiles is so ridiculous, and the Yamato is so damaged that it is not understood why it is still alive. So there is the conflict between the producers' desire to let Yamato win, but the fact that it is just a fantasy.
