The way the KnY handles moral cover is a little interesting. Moral cover is the JP genre law of making antagonists evil with no grey area in order to ensure they “deserve” being killed by the protagonists. Tanjiro is depicted as especially empathetic, so moral cover has to be especially strong; demons become comically, irredeemably evil, even when they aren’t particularly evil. For example, Azaka who is just a standard shounen antagonist, a battle maniac who only cares about strength, but Tanjiro has to make sure the reader understands that Azaka is a loathsome scumbag who hates babies and kills people. He’ll get his moral zinger in and proceed to extermination. Yet the narrative pretends to care about why Azaka became evil even while it dismisses everything about his thoughts and everything he’s experienced in his long life. There’s not a SINGLE person in his life who doesn’t view him as a superhero who saved them from an impossible situation? How many abusive husband’s heads has he punched off because he heard a woman crying? Do they all think of him as a loathsome evil scumbag? Even Douma must have people here and there whom he didn’t eat who will steadfastly defend his honor for all the help he actually gave them. How many people has Kokushibo shown mercy towards when they lowered their heads to him? MUCH more than the number of demons who’ve been spared by demon hunters in the plot, which is zero. Tanjiro is supposedly special because he’s super-duper empathetic hero who understands that even demons were human once and wants their souls to be at rest, but in REALITY the narrative makes SURE moral cover is overdrive to cover for this trait. It’s ridiculous pablum.
