>manga comes out in the early 2000's
>later chapters incorporate modern technology that wouldn't exist considering the setting
why do this?

Lol, Tsurenai Hodo Aokute Azatoi Kurai ni Akai takes place in 1999, but there are flat monitors and internet, the only retro thing is flip phones. It something with Japanese, they don't care about such things

I think it's funny. Especially for the ones running really long. Hayate was probably the funniest one.

Because the author's intent was never for it to be a period piece, it's set in the present day.

Nips prefer for a series that takes place in "the present day" to keep up with the times, that's also why almost every remake does the same thing

Yotsuba isn't some seinen manga where the plot and worldbuilding is important.
Its a manga about family life so it makes sense to change things to make it feel relatable to the current times.

You don’t need to be a seinen to have a consistent world, though either way I don’t mind as long as the characters are the same

Are there manga that don't do it? Start with a contemporary series and after 30 years of publication the characters are still running/fighting in the 90s?

Personal Data Assistant. An electronic rolodex and calendar. The term was coined by then Apple CEO John Scully at the announcement of the "Newton" in 1992. It was produced for only 5 years, caused a massive financial loss for Apple and allowed exiled founder Steve Jobs to get back into the good graces of the Apple board and stockholders and retake control of the company.

Sazae-san notably doesn't do this, and it went from being a very timely and surprisingly controversial show offering actual social criticism to a show for old people to nostalgiafag about how comfy the 70s were.

Cell phones ruined fiction. Pretty much every plot for an 80s sitcom could never happen today because one call on a cell phone would solve the problem immediately.

That's a really flimsy reason. I was thinking more like that episode of Perfect Strangers where everyone got trapped in the basement and it was flooding. It's not feasible for 30 people's phones to all have dead batteries or all get wet at the same time. But one call to 911 would've saved the day.

>no battery/no signal
If it was still the late 00s to 10s, that could work. But it's 2025, if your phone doesn't have a battery that lasts a day or two at minimum, and the antenna doesn't encompass the entire frame, screen and glass back, you're doing it wrong.

For Yotsuba To, it sort of feels like the time period is just being slowly revealed.
Koiwai is neither rich nor fashionable, so it's somewhat believable that he didn't have a smart phone up until the late 2010s. And Yotsuba herself is a little kid, she wouldn't have access to or be interested in technology like that just yet.

Fairly sure this is why the Ranma remake stayed with the 80s setting. Way too many plots would make no sense in a cellphone/internet world.
