Episodes 1-516 (pre-timeskip) are absolutely worth it. If you think it starts out slow, reach Arlong Park arc (episode 31). It has everything that makes One Piece great. If you still don't like it, drop it. Episodes 517 and onwards (post-timeskip), despite having high highs, reach previously unimagined lows, so if you're willing to push on, prepare for dissapointment. It's a mixed bag. You can switch to manga to skim through the terribleness, or just drop the whole thing when things get way too retarded to stomache.

Watching? Sure, at the start they do 2 chapters per episode so it's tolerable. At, what, Skypiea/Water 7 they start to do 1 chapter per episode so the pace gets horrible.

Read the manga, watch cool scenes animated from Youtube.

Thriller Bark and Impel Down are the only pre-timeskip arcs with noticable pacing issues. Even then, I don't think it's bad enough YET to switch to manga.

It's legit peak shounen kino if you watch it in Japanese, somewhere up to episode 320 (when the Enies Lobby arc ends).
Cool OSTs, awesome morales, inspiring MC despite what the Youtube haters say about Luffy.
After Enies Lobby, it kinda gets a drag to watch because the pacing starts going really slow. You can tell the anime gets bad when they get rid of the ending songs (around episode 320). But before that it's definitely worth a watch, 100%.

I dropped it around episode 450, when they meet Shirahoshi underwater. Not sure if I should continue

It's my favorite Shonen manga. If you like Dragon Ball when Goku was a kid, you'll probably like it. Anime is watchable until the Enies Lobby arc, then manga only is the way to go.

Just watch One Pace. it cuts the series down by around 500 eps just by removing Toei filler
