Both these things stripped any chances of mainstream potential, it's not about the series quality but how much it appeals to modern consumer mentality. Even if the anime was good it'd probably be forgotten by now since the manga is so slow. And even if it was weekly the adaptation quality would've put it in a similar place as Sakamoto Days in the best case scenario. Not that any of this is a bad thing, it's a godsend to be able to enjoy a series without speedreaders, contrarians, and other crap shitting up discussions.
