Why Luffy never tried the good'n'old Gomu Gomu no Pistol on Kaido?
This attack was the SHIT during east blue. It even KOed a sea king( Strong-as-fuck-END-GAME-BOSS who ruled the WHOLE SEA )
I really think he sould've used Gomu Gomu no pistol( vanilla ). It would've worked for sure

Okay so this in refrence to the legend of Shuten Doji and Yamato Takeru.
Yamato Takeru was a prince who was wild, didn't listen and always caused problems, killed his siblings in a drunken rage so his dad kicked him out and sent him to go fight some bandits who didn't listen to shit his dad said to do. So Yamato went out there, and did as he was told, killed a the bandits and their king after a long and hard fight with the legendary Ame No Murakumo No Tsurugi which would then be renamed to Kusanagi No Tsurugi after this. This kinda made him dad like him again and they all lived happily ever after until he got too cocky and went to fight the god of Mt. Ibuki without his sword and got cursed and died.
Few hundred years later same time there was an Oni king named Shuten Douji who in real life and the earliest context clues was probably a mountain bandit leader who was causing all sorts of Trouble so Minamoto No Raikou was ordered by the Emperor to go deal with it. So he took his four great heaveny Kings, dressed up as mountain kings and killed Shuten Doji after poisoning his wine.
Anyways some eagles eyes might notice... Kaidou is based on Shuten Doji, his name "Kaidou" is actually the name which Shuten Douji was said to have been called a child for being big and strong. Yamato is named after Takeru with her Kanabo even being named after his first name. And Momonosuke is obviously Momotaro who has his own legend about slaying an Oni King on Onigashima

nah come on WB loved him too. There is also how the strawhats, especially Luffy react to him by just hearing his story and suddenly holding him in high esteem. Kaido has permanent ptsd from him and ranks him next to the strongest characters of the entire verse. This might be petty but there are also just random lines even from Blackbeard saying how strong Oden is, or Akainu mentioning him in some context. This is what I mean by almost every important characters suddenly somehow relating to this guy

I think Luffy rides Oden because it's typical tragicomedy with roger-lore thrown in, so Luffy pays attention.Do we really know how much was passed on to Kin? What did Luffy really hear compared to what 'we' saw?

We can also see Luffy giving a fuck about a backstory as his character progression. He's starting to bother hearing the locals problems in full, instead of blowing it off and just slamming fists into the local antagonist. There will come a time where he needs to slap the shit out of Imu for more than 'a guy I knew fed me, you hurt him, I hurt you'.
