I dropped Hikaru after like 10 chapters, so I don't know what its ghost hole is like. But Hanako-kun has one in the domain of the grim reaper dude that leads to the realm of the dead. And Sekiro has one in a cave that technically doesn't lead to the underworld but does lead to a spooky undead village.
I can only assume that something depicted an entrance to Yomi as a hole in the ground at some point and it stuck.

If it was easy then it would have just turned in to a custom like saying bless you when people sneeze and there would have never been a ghost problem. Although it still seems kind of suspicious to me. Normally you'd expect something like that to be about placating the spirit. But based on Chi's personality and desires, I don't see how that would work.

Instead of placation the ritual might be about forcing the spirit out of the possessed person. The spirit comes out through the cross shaped cut and the severed fingers anchor it outside. Or something. I only see this working if Chi's a normal kid possessed by Ryota's dead twin though. if he's an ancient eldritch being it'll be useless.

That sounds very plausible. But I agree that it would likely only work if Chi was indeed just Ryota's dead brother, with decent odds of that not being the case.

Ryota was touching all over little Chi and didn't get slurped up like Kyoya. I really don't think he was possessed back then. Which calls in to question him being the one the ritual is to be performed on.

Is it Ryota that is actually turning those around him in monster or are the monster just somehow attracted to him.?

Chika turned her when she was little. He is the original monster that possessed all these other people. And he's the only one that ever existed as a disembodied spirit.
Chika obviously has a very strong attachment to Ryota. And Shirono went all yandere towards him at first. So there's a good chance that something about Ryota causes the monsters to be attracted to him somehow. And it could be how he ended up with Chi in the first place.

Chika was showing a lot of restraint before now. In every other respect he acts as though he really does think like a toddler. But he knows perfectly well how not to blow his cover and is only doing so now out of desperation.
They should have just let him have his happy quiet life.
