I just finished the original series (I,e. up to the end of johto), only recommend if you're attached to the series already. On its own terms I give it a 4/10 (kanto and orange islands 5/10). But I heard sun and moon is legit good so I'm watching all of it.

The movies and pikachu specials are actually worth watching, they are filled with great animation

He has no character growth in all those episodes. All they did was fight Team Rocket and do mon of the day missions. He should have had all his growth leading up through the 8 gyms and been ready for the League. The Johto season should have been him being more mature and stronger than all others and even having an understudy. He would repeat season 1 and then win the league a second time then retiring.
