I like it but I think it escalated way too quickly, in terms of power levels and stuff.

HOW WOULD YOU DO IT

Either draw out the fourth arc and have it gradually build up or cut it entirely and extend the chapter black arc so that Yusuke would reasonably be able to handle Sensui by their actual fight.

ok?

Yeah, dark tournament is overrated. Should have been more about all kinds of different demons with weird powers. The only fighter who wins without punching harder is Kurama, and he still punches harder for part of those fights anyway. Genkai severely injures 70% Toguro while running on fumes. It would have been believable for Yusuke to defeat him with technique.

They had the perfect solution with the chapter black arc. The psychics and Sensui are amazing concepts as introduced. They could have easily thrown all of the power scaling up to that point out the window. Too bad it literally septuples down on power creep at the very end.

Honestly I would have much preferred if it had just been entirely "ghost detective"

We're not doing revisionism on Dark Tournament. It was a good follow up to previous arcs, just like how Chapter Black was an incredible follow up to all the questions a reader/watcher would have after Dark Tournament.

Three Kings exists, and Togashi continuing to waste time with the Succesion War for HxH just continues to hurt more and more. How did he just lose passion like that so quickly with the Three Kings arc?

There was a literal author note explaining and apologizing what happened in the manga. He mentioned the later half of the series was his most stressful times in his life because he was going through a lot of shit stress, health issues, and on top of Jump editors pushing "THEIR" ideas for the series adding to more stress. It got to the point where he broken down and blockaded his office just to keep them from coming in and middling with the series because they were that pushy. Dragon Ball had ended while YYH was still running so eventually YYH became the next big hit in Japan and Jump probably just wanted another Dragon Ball Z. By the final arc he just want to end the series quickly.

He most likely lawyer'ed up after the incident and is why Jump still keeps him around and let him release HxH chapters whenever his feels like it. Any other mangaka would have been axed by now and Jump is quick to axe a manga even if it was popular at one point.

People only care about Dark Tournament because of Yusuke, Genkai and Toguro (the others get some too) character moments. As far as pure shonenshit goes it's an average arc, but the characters make it good.

I prefer Chapter Black, but the Dark Tournament is easily the best tournament arc in shounen.

That's not a high bar.

It's there a tournament arc in a different genre? Excluding the obvious one, Chihiyafuru.
