No it came out in peak normlafag anime season. This was the time period in which every normalfag out there was starting to watch anime for the first time.

It had a good advertising campaign and people thought it was the next snafu so it gained a lot of hype among more hardcore weaboo's. This hype created a snowball effect where it reached normalfags. Normalfag's ego's are attached to sociability so its not as easy for them to dissent against something, its a risk that may make them the outgroup. Thusly, even if normalfags thought it didn't live up to the hype they continued to pretend it did until the end so that they didn't have to be that negative guy.

You have to understand it takes a lot of courage to go against the grain for normalfags. Combine that with not wanting to admit they were fooled or wrong and its a recipe for this scenario being played out.

This is what happens almost every single time.

I tend to not be into the really popular shit but I gave this show a chance, and I liked it because it told a slightly interesting love story with some surface-level-mysticism added in. Is it stellar? No. Is it good? Yes. Is it entertaining? Yes.
But I don't really have the highest standards for things anymore. I also don't give a fuck who does and does not like a thing. If I find it enjoyable, I watch.

It’s popular because it matches the autism wavelength perfectly. This should have been obvious even before they got to the movie that’s an infomercial for special schooling. Look at how dull and flat all the affects are, how muted the colors and unsharpened the shapes. It’s specially crafted not to be too overwhelming to the senses. No, the drama of it is toned down to be more realistic. If the drama were fantastical it would involve the deaths and love triangles. TV and publishing standards tip a lot of products toward purity but anime and manga have been at the vanguard of normalizing alternative identities for women and sexual freedom.
I can think of several “busting up the arranged marriage” plotlines but it would be interesting to do a full tally of depictions of the old fashioned negotiation meetings with family and/or go betweens (Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Artist of the Floating World” has an exact depiction of this tedious crap, I think it comes up in the original Parasite Eve novel as well) that go through to marriage versus how many times that system gets overturned. The one that always jumps to my mind is Medaka Box’s entire arc about beating up suitors.
