TV and publishing standards tip a lot of products toward purity but anime and manga have been at the vanguard of normalizing alternative identities for women and sexual freedom.
I can think of several “busting up the arranged marriage” plotlines but it would be interesting to do a full tally of depictions of the old fashioned negotiation meetings with family and/or go betweens (Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Artist of the Floating World” has an exact depiction of this tedious crap, I think it comes up in the original Parasite Eve novel as well) that go through to marriage versus how many times that system gets overturned. The one that always jumps to my mind is Medaka Box’s entire arc about beating up suitors.
