that's why I'm tempted to do it myself, at least I speak english and can get things to a readable state. and honestly, chatgpt does a better job than a lot of the aSEAn fan translations that are basically the norm already. I can't keep track of the times I've come across a confusingly worded page from a fan translation, thrown the raw into chatgpt, and gotten a perfectly clear translation that was either obviously more correct, or was proven more correct later in the chapter or in a later chapter.
really makes me wonder how there are still such bad translations out there

The most mind boggling thing to me is like 30chapters in, the translator changes, ok fine maybe there was a hiatus and someone new picked it up but like
>character names changed
>locations changed
>common descriptions of things are changed

All things that were repeatedly used in the last 30 chapters just get replaced
I understand eslers struggling but how do they manage that, like why continue a translation of something you haven’t followed previously at all

Someone like this doesn't read manga. He's paying more attention to the people behind it and internal drama than the manga. It's the equivalent of a twitter ragebait /v/ poster. There's a lot of projection we don't even know is true. You could honestly ignore a nitpick like this. It doesn't matter if it's true, why are you paying this much attention to e-celebs? Who tells you to police that? Your investment in manga comes from e-celeb gossip culture.

I even ran into a couple in series I had been reading in English and just like with MTL by people with zero knowledge of Japanese, a lot of the handwritten text outside of bubbles was just erased because the tool couldn't parse it and the person "translating" doesn't even know kana.

We should've developed a culture where learning Japanese is a natural progression for an anime fan right after the early stages of getting into anime (basically the next step after having discovered popular series on TV or Netflix or whatever). We should've urged everyone to learn Japanese just like everyone is naturally learning English for everything else.

>a lot of the handwritten text outside of bubbles was just erased

I noticed this with an otherwise really good eromanga I was fapping to, good thing I checked the raws because removing the handwritten text not only missed nuance and mood but affected the line assignment with shifting speakers and totally changed the mood of the scene. Plus they translated sound effects relating to physical reactions as just moans.

Now how many have just done that in plain sight? You can't trust anyone but yourself.

If the output is bad, the TL is bad even if the translator understood the Japanese perfectly. They don't necessarily have the skill to convey their understanding well enough. There are many ways in which a translation can be bad, poor knowledge of the source language is only one of them.

I've been going back to some of my beloved manga titles that I've read back when I couldn't read Japanese, and oh boy. 00s and early 10s scanlation was really bad. Official translation was better on average, but there was also a lot of nonsense and poor QC in there. Sometimes I thought that some of the plot doesn't make sense, only to find out that it's all perfectly logical in Japanese. It's always been bad, and while you cannot trust yourself either (you generally don't understand the source language as well as the brain makes you think), in most cases trusting yourself is the better option.

I'm definitely ashamed of some of my scanlation efforts, particularly the earlier ones. I don't think I did _that_ bad, as I'm always autistically researching whenever something doesn't make sense to me, but those have their fair share of misunderstood lines or really bad cases of "anime English" (I am an ESL after all). I rarely translate these days, but when I do I don't have the luxury of having an editor or a QC, so even now some time after releasing I notice some oddity and get really depressed about it since it can't be changed any longer. Not that I'm not just generally depressed all of the time anyway...

People learn english because it's an official language in 4 out of the 10 biggest countries economically, and it has a large number of speakers so it works as a lingua franca, the ability to consoom entertainment only available in english is a nice bonus, but a bonus nonetheless.
Japanese is pretty much only spoken in Japan and in a couple small diasporas, you're essentially learning an entire language solely for the purpose of consooming

That could be said for media in any language, again, I'm not saying there's zero point in learning Japanese, if a wider pool of media options drives you enough to go through the arduous and lengthy process of learning a language, more power to you, I even find it worthy of admiration. My point is that the vast majority of weebs don't like anime and manga enough to go through this process, and without anything else at the end of the road, it's no wonder the vast majority gives up 2-3 weeks after starting
