Kaiju no. 8 is pretty good and relatively genre defying for shonenshit, though all the good parts should be in the second season and then it becomes super boring.

I've wondered for how anime would be ranked by popularity if there was no hype effect skewing everything. What if every show and movie that was ever made and ever will be made came out at the same time without advertising, and everyone had to start from zero picking through thousands of shows without any prior knowledge of them? Which ones would rise to the top after a decade and which would end up virtually unknown?

>I simply can’t discuss the business we are in without a bit of bitterness. Compared to some of the works from the 1950s that I will always hold as a gold standard, the animation that we are making in the 1980s resembles the food served on jumbo jet airliners … The emotions and thoughts that should be so moving have given way to showiness, nervousness, and titillation. Frankly I despise the truncated word β€˜anime’ because to me it only symbolizes the current desolation of our industry.

Mainly Toei movies.
You must remember that Miyazaki became an anime otaku in his youth because he was obsessed with his 2D waifu.

Is Miyazaki one of the most blatant cases of arrested development ever that still managed to become successful?
