Daily Detective Conan case
I'll be storytiming the manga, one complete case per day. Most cases are around 3-6 chapters long.
Feel free to drop in at any time, since it's mostly episodic.

Origins of character names (in the original Japanese):
Kudo Shinichi: Kudo came from Kudo Shunsaku, the protagonist 1979 detective drama Tantei Monogatari; Shinichi perhaps came from Shinjitsu wa Itsumo Hitotsu (There is only one truth).
Mouri Ran: came from Maurice Leblanc, author of Arsène Lupin.
Mouri Kogoro: Kogoro came from Akechi Kogoro, a detective created by Edogawa Ranpo.
Agasa: Agasa came from Agatha Christie.
Idk if Viz put much thought into the localized names

As has been reiterated every thread, Viz is the superior choice despite the name changes.
>Far superior image quality
>More concise, legible translations
>Consistent typesetting, words don't flow out of or overflow textbubbles
These three factors alone make it a better daily than scanlations.
t. first experience with Conan was reading the first 500~ chapters via the scanlation a decade ago.

Just comparing those two pages there's a lot of differences that do lower the quality overall- same reason why the JoJo storytimes opted for the official Viz volumes rather than the fan translations. Consistency and quality over names.
The Viz TL here is just more professionally done. What takes the fan scanlation 38 words and 17 lines to accomplish in the middle bottom panel of this page >>281680019 the Viz TL accomplishes 35 words and 19 lines, rarely having more than ten characters occupying a single line, and with only one wordbreak as opposed to three.
For a single line that doesn't seem like a lot, but it is. The Viz release is the more concise one, and again, there's the matter of consistency- the Conan scanlations are not consistently at the mediocre level, both in general writing, as well as in visual quality. If you're on anything more than a phone, low quality scans with poor/messy cleaning just looks bad and ruins the art. That combined with poor formatting with how the dialogue is presented results in a product that isn't exactly good for reading.
>>281686258
Japanese companies are very weird on branding.
There's a degree of irony to this in that despite being called Case Closed and using names like Jimmy and Rachel, Conan will go on to just use the Japanese names past the point where the dub ended (and didn't even use the Funi name for Ai Haibara ). That's partly why the dub names don't entirely matter, as the only ones that you will consistently see end up being "Moore" and "Meguire", with Anita. being the one that sticks out the most by that point.
You see a similar thing with Dragon Ball- Toei are the ones forcing the usage of names like "Tien", "Spirit Bomb", "Krillin", "Frieza", "Vegito", etc. for the sake of consistent branding, rather than Funimation seeking it out.

As for this >>281679049 though, I was someone looking into that and it'd be too time consuming. You would only be editing a few lines per chapter, but it'd require finding said lines, and if you wanted to be professional about it, it'd require a keen eye. Rachel is six characters- Ran is three.
Jimmy is five characters- Shinichi is 8 (9 if you use the Shin'ichi rendering).

It's doable and not something that'd require significant effort in the abstract- but it'd be a monotonous, unrewarding process that would take several weeks as the work is over 1100 chapters.

>Open the page in Paint, cut out the line, retype it with the correct name, done. Like 10-15 minutes of work in addition to the time spent reading through the chapter.
That's not how simple it is.
You'd need the correct style for one thing, and to my knowledge, Viz's style is basically a company secret, so you'd need to make your own or find a "close enough" equivalent.
You'd then need to properly align the characters, and have them spaced properly according to the rest of the dialogue bubble. In photoshop this is nothing, but in your suggestion, which is paint, that's a whole process.
Not every instance of a name change occurs on a white text box though. This one is on a gradiant, which would require either whiting out the entire gradiant, inserting new lines, skewing said lines to match the presentation, and then inserting your own gradient, or just plain not giving a shit.

Same thing here- do we change this, or leave it as is? That's also actually full redrawing to boot, which means you would need to redraw this yourself.
And none of this is consistent. Text changes size and style every other line because it's a comic, and that means everytime a name is changed, you have to adjust to the style surrounding it.

I really hate the entire "hiding his identity" shtick. She already fucking suspects him, she's his girlfriend, she's calling him by his name in public spaces as a test. This isn't the only time it happens. She's constantly going "Oh how strange i havent seen shinichi very much since Conan appeared" to everyone who'll listen. You should let her in on it and shore up your alibi. But then there wouldn't be any ~drama~ to milk.
