Man, that ending was fucking depressing.
Not the obvious "and he was a nobody living a boring life and then died the end"

But in the portrayal of the "other worlds" also having a futility to them. Sure, you could adventure for centuries if you feel risky, build a tower to nowhere, be a villain and a hero anything
And the more you do, the more meaningless every single piece, every experience, becomes. A well of infinite possibilities. Your first fight was exhilarating, now you've had a forgettable amount, your first loss of a loved one was hell, now you've had so many, so many good ones too, so many

Nagara was right
If I can choose in which inevitable world I get to experience my life, I won't take the one that forces into me the experience of every experience becoming (and so being) meaningless.

The ending didn't feel good it felt real.

Especially getting the shitty restaurant job. MC grew up, left behind the fantasy world of childhood, realized that the girl he likes was only interested in "fixing him", got a job and started adulthood. Kino. One must imagine Nagara happy.

There’s nothing honorable about Nagara being a cuck. It just means he’ll be stuck with sloppy seconds when he and Nozomi reunite in the future right after she’s already mapped out every detail of Asakaze’s dick from the feel to the shape and size.

Sonnyfags said it was a good ending because they managed to find a universe where she's alive at the expense of Nagara being a cuck lmao. How about trying 10 thousand times harder to find the one where he isn’t? Such a defeatist and stupid ending when the original path they should’ve followed was already good enough on its own (Nozomi died). So much for a coming-of-age show. The show shits on its own theme once it starts doing the whole “find a universe where Nozomi’s alive” thing.

In the end she's interested in Yazakaze because unlike Nagara he hasn't grown up, Nozomi is an "I can fix him" girl and Nagara isn't "broken" enough anymore.
The injured bird.

Some women are just like this. Best avoided, because like Nozomi she will leave as soon as you are "fixed" and therefore uninteresting.

Yazakaze is a "seeker of validation" who values himself based on other's opinions of him. Nagara looks inward for value. Yazakaze is like a runner still at the starting line at the end while Nagara has finished the race.

The thing that did different at least by me, is the feeling of meaningless-ness that permeated everything. The other worlds, the real world, even the actions and full life story of the characters, and even the characters themselves understood that.
In every other story the characters are involved in, things that happen are critical, important, it does matter to them and to the reader whether they advance on their path to be or get something, be the pirate king or solve the murder case or get the dream girl.
Here, every fantasy could be looked at from outside, no matter how grandiose, and be infected with "meaningless", and so escape becomes the thing in which the lack of meaning shines even more obvious

It's a baseball league here in the world of Monkey Mountain,
played by the great monkeys, which started when the first ball and bat
and the rules of the game were handed down to them.
In the Monkey League, a number of great players arose
from among the nameless monkeys,
whose faces and appearances all looked the same.
They included the legendary home run king,
who batted an unprecedented, record-breaking
80 home runs in one year, Steroid Monkey;
the one who bested the god of batting, Monkey River's career batting average
by two thousandths, the miracle hitting machine, Upper Monkey;
the greatest catcher of the Bigfoot era, Mister Monkey;
later, as manager, he would go on to break the record for most league wins,
with a legendary ten-season-long streak!
Then came the golden age of the M-League.
A miracle monkey came along
and shattered those previous legends one by one--
the monster, Monkey Blue!
This maverick of the league was the only one with blue hair,
who, despite weathering ugly discrimination and crafty persecution,
triumphed over them with overwhelming talent, ultimately becoming a hero,
and a symbol of hope for the monkeys!
Although a rookie, Blue put the brakes to the king, Steroid Monkey!
Breaking his bat as well as his heart, Blue drove him to retirement.
Then, with his mighty pitching arm,
Blue led the underdog team Monkey and Club to victory,
preventing Bigfoot's championship streak from reaching 11.
The public accepted this new hair color,
and there was no doubt in anybody's mind
that the era of Monkey Blue had begun! But then...
...that great tragedy, when a near-perfect game was foiled,
and a monkey was killed, took place!

But that's my argument. You've just pointed at the excess describing the author of the long excerpt as pretentious, that's the information the excess indicates, that's why "brevity is.." etc
So maybe your point was that "sometimes that excess does translate to different things and not just the pretentiousness of the author" which, if it was, sure why not, it's vague enough we can say you are right

I think the true dissonance of this anime is that apparently we're following a bunch of middle schoolers, immature and dumb and for whom their entire lives exist before them. But they act like fucking high schoolers about to enter the real world of adulthood and careers and singular identities that are difficult to change.

This is why people come away from this anime with such a sour taste in their mouth. If Nozomi was properly painted as a middle school girl who just wanted Nagara to come out of his shell and take action, it would be easy to make peace with the idea that the nu-Nozomi is just doing the same with Akaze in this new world. That the Nagara we went along with is finally "fixed" so to speak, and ready to tackle the new world of high school maturation, where everything becomes a little more real and has a real consequences and requires more action on each person's part.

But every fucking character looks and acts and speaks like a high schooler. The show is fundamentally flawed because as a viewer you start to see these as high schoolers and need genuine reminders that they aren't. That in my opinion feels like the fatal flaw of the show.

In FLCL, it is completely transparent that Naota is barely in middle school and that the internal chaos he's going through is being reflected externally at him. That his journey through puberty is as meaningfully confusing to him as everything that Haruko is putting him through. It was obvious that the people who were freaks and truly damaged by the real world. This should have been how Sonny Boy was played out. These should have been children doing childish things. Instead they were all navel-gazing sub-bureaucratic little freaks who all looked at least 17.

We all know life is shite for the most part, but things are nit that bad
what young people need is motivation to keep fighting, not demoralization
Shows like this make me think japs are trully defeated, or maybe the intention is to make people angry, "no I don't want to be that guy, fuck it, I'm going to get into politics to save the youth and start a right wing militia"

I think the overall message is true happiness isn't achieved through mindless escapism. Leaving behind everything and living in a world entirely just about and for you isn't going to be fulfilling for everyone (though some characters certainly make an argument against that).

For Mr. Sonny Boy, he really didn't have anywhere to escape to. Just like you said he's empty of all passions and drive, so his only real choice was to return to the real world and find one. Struggle and find his passions.

If you want to look at it in a meta way, Nagara's power was to "escape", or "create" worlds.
He's an artist, but only gets that sort of inspiration from living in a miserable world. He's a creator, but can't live in his creations.

I completely agree with you, yet I don't mind it at all. Would the show be better if they were all in high school? They could all be in preschool for all I care. The characterization is just really good that's why I like it.

Naota is in elementary school. He's not a middle schooler until the very final scene.
