When you realize that Tolkien was so traumatized by his war experience he could not realize he wound up giving the Elves and Maia all the tools needed for mechanized warfare...
He had a snake-mecha appear as a siege engine in the Fall of Gondolin in the Silmarillion, then drove it out of his mind. Interestingly, the snake mecha was modeled exactly after a metal articulated snake toy, a example of which is currently in the British Museaum. Made in Japan in the 1860s or 70s by a suddenly unemployed lamillar armor maker who tried to find another living. There is a photograph of it in Stephen Turnbull's book "Arms and Armour of the Samurai" at the back in the final chapter.
Since the Elves had the ability to make energy absorbing crystals that could be batteries, they had the means to create power sources like melefs had in Escaflowne. And a big suit of armor like that would put a Elf or Human warrior on a much more even footing with a Balrog or Dragon...
