Free will is an ill-defined concept, it only really makes sense with a body-mind duality assumption, and then the question becomes if the mind is just spectator. But now people who try to foil the concept largey do not believe in the duality, and are using arguments that do not actually fit how they perceive, or claim to preceive, the world.

A lot of you don’t get the hidden aspect because you don’t understand isekai tropes. Demons is a translation of "mazuko", lit. evil clan, which is the enemy race of DragonQuest and almost always the "demons" consisting the demon army ruled by a demon king destined to be defeated by the Yuusha (translated "hero"). This is the basic scenario of Frieren, too. What Frieren does, however, is delve into the trope a little more, ie, "why do demons kill humans", because it’s their nature. Mazuko are NPCs with a setting "attack humans", so if you were to ask one why they do so they themselves would have no idea why. Frieren decides that they’re just monsters who have learned to mimic speech but that’s just racism to justify her hatred of them. Demons are humans in every meaningful way except they are missing the empathy circuit and they have an instinct / impulse to kill. It’s not even a desire to kill, it’s just something they do. If they’re pursuing some goal they can easily suppress the impulse, like Macht who went 50 years without killing anyone. So it’s a NPC setting issue that gets turned into this more complex problem in the narrative.

You're missing the point the series is making. It's not that humans are incapable of being evil, it's that they're capable of being good. S1 didn't get this much into human depravity, but it still alludes to it, e.g. with Wirbel's story of enemy armies sending children soldiers at him; S2 will get more into evils of human nature, and S3 (if it happens) even more-so. But humans can grow and change. The principal role of demons is to be a foil to that, they're here to highlight the human capability for redemption by contrast.

It's not really a question that can be debated because we have never encountered a species that are as intellectually advanced as us that ALSO isn't incredibly closely related to us.
