No sure if it was a book first but there's a Japanese movie called Blue Christmas/Blood Type: Blue that I'm 100% sure he watched

Go Nagai and Ishinomori manga, and that was probably about it.
Anno isn't a very literate person.

Beyond the Pleasure Principle
This is Freud's essay that spoke about Euros and Thanatos which feature as large themes in Evangelion, he probably read another book that explained Freud's theories more generally though

watch end of evangelion
and that's it
leave rebuilds for much later when you're in the mood for some fan fiction and nice visuals
you may even just skip them altogether but i liked the third movie since i'm a kaworu fan

you can wait a bit, watch some trailers for Death & Rebirth on YouTube and then watch Death & Rebirth itself,
wait a bit more, watch some trailers for EoE,
and then watch The End of Evangelion.

Death and Rebirth is a recap movie so it's optional, but good if you need a refresh

Don't know why everyone's so down on the rebuilds, they're clearly about moving on and reflecting about the show 20 years later after finding success

Moving on isn't Evangelion. Being trapped in a self-destructive spiral is Evangelion.

Most visual artists aren't very literate in the conventional sense of the word. They must spend all their free time studying the natural world and other visual artists in order to become 'visually literate'. Since there are only so many hours in a day, an unfortunate tradeoff must be made. This is why literate visual artists are such a rarity. Even ones well-versed in the classics like JAD Ingres tended to restrict themselves to those classics and read them over and over again.

Probably anything by Manly P. Hall, Helena Blavatsky, and ancient Abrahamic, Mesopotamian and Greek manuscripts. Anno is /x/ pilled through and through.
