He knows his work is popular overseas (Disney audience) and that mainland animation otaku (the ones who pay) aren't as interested overall. They can't outright say what they mean because it'll make them lose money, but they still resent their paying overseas customers. Mindset is more common than you think, especially among older Japs.

I think Studio Ghibli is (like) the Kremlin. -laughs- The real one is long gone, but it's still sitting in the middle of the field in Higashi Koganei. But in a sense, there is a reason for it's existence, meaning, I think it plays a certain role by existing. Just like those steel-like athletes could not be produced other than in the communist countries, a certain kind of people can not be produced by the principals of the market economy.
There should be a type of animator who can be fostered only by Ghibli, where the level of staff is really high, from in-between to painting. So, it can be valued in the sense that it cultured (such staff members) purely, but if you ask me if it's totally right, I'd say I don't think so. I think they should be disbanded immediately. -laughs- I think it would be more meaningful if those who grew up at Ghibli would go outside.

GITS 2 has a scene where a bunch of police are walking back and forth across background shot, but too close to the focus to just turn into vague motion. A lot of perspective correct realistic animation had to be done and in multiple layers because there were several dudes walking around and intersecting with each other's paths. And it was all laid on one animator's desk and put him in the hospital by the end. And Oshii just laughed about it like a casual anecdote.

I can understand where he's coming from. I wouldn't really call most Otaku pandering works artistic or complex, but Otaku are pretty much the lifeblood of anime. Seeing the "Normalization" of typically nerdy hobbies has put me on the Otakus side. I never got the feeling he was actually into planes from his movies. It felt more like a kid copying what his dad did without the passion or full understanding of it, and that sort of is confirmed with what bits and pieces of his life story I've seen. Everyone hypes him as a plane lover, but I am an actual aircraft lover, and I see little to no passion for the craft from him. I think he just has nostalgia for it from old dogfight movies (like Lucas had) and from his dad working on planes.

Not saying he needed to draw plane porn, but not having a license to fly is a BIG indicator he's just not that into them.
