Why do we never get good anime that are a celebration of otaku culture anymore? Stories that glorify maid cafes, or chuuni, or channer isms. Anything that does this now is guaranteed to be some isekai slop.

Zoomers don't care about otaku culture as a thing to idealize. They just watch the anime and then move on to something else.

I would say there's no point anymore.
Those series in the past had a reason to exist because anime and manga were considered things of Otakus and Otakus were considered the scum of society.
...but these days anime and manga are widely consumed by normies so it feels unnecessary.

Even a bunch of people who go to cons these days basicly just sit around on their phones.

I wouldn't even call Steins;Gate a good anime and the excess of pandering is one of the things I didn't like about it.
It's not like I don't also enjoy otaku culture but being excessively proud of it to the point of saying meme phrases in real life is just stupid.

One major thing about zoomers is that they are OBSESSED with being ironic because they are too afraid to be genuine about fucking anything.

Celebrating otaku culture is definitely not something they would spearhead since meta ironic anime commentary is really popular with them.

It’s the ultimate effect of the subculture going mainstream, which is also paradoxically part of why the originally negative label otaku was taken up as self-identification. It’s been successfully asserted that the stereotypes are untrue and it’s not abnormal to like anime, that otaku are just regular humans. The less aversion to otaku there is, the less a sense of that identity there can be except in a historical and folkloric way. The dissolution of “otaku” was one of the original motivations driving the subculture, just as much as trying to adhere to a negative image to draw a division and maintain exclusivity as a subculture.

>>281691300
Konosuba is a perfect example though just because you can directly compare Kazuma to traditional otaku depictions as an updated form. You can see where he gets pulled in mainstream directions.

Can you really not tell at a glance how superior the art, composition, and storyboarding in S;G are? OST, themes, VA performances, sfx, all steps above average and remembered fondly. Even without getting into the narrative, the characters, and the metanarratives it should be obvious why S;G is well regarded.

I did not like any of these. The characters were lame and the time travel finale of the MC going back to the beginning and running around in the background has been done so many times already, I was disappointed when that's all it ended up being.

It’s not that they want everything to be targeted to them so much as they only respond to things that are so targeted, thus the profit motive inevitably shifts production toward that end. All sorts of aspects of otaku subculture continue to remain relevant, perhaps the clearest example being the occult. This even extends into the use of magical realist elements, such as is so popular in Japanese fiction overall. Dandadan is an obvious descendant of classic works with timeless tropes like the UFO obsessed nerd and tests of courage in the abandoned tunnel and hospital. But that series and the steady flow of Shinkai films and the lesser “semi-spiritualist trauma healing stories” all demonstrate the actual driving force of the industry: getting every young person possible in a seat. That’s also evident in the accelerating trend of doing theatrical releases for TV shows which is saturating the US too at this point.

Being able to recognize S;G as a masterpiece and articulate why is something like a bare minimum for having an opinion on any other subject taken seriously. It’s just like the people who try to shit on NGE and Anno when the actual bar for being considered worthy of posting here is being able to produce a defense of the show as a phenomenal accomplishment going through many elements of its craftsmanship to demonstrate your point while offering a diatribe on your favorite girl.

If someone says something like “the characters are lame” about S;G there’s really nothing else to do but laugh at them for knowing nothing and being an asshole.

I'd posit it's an inability more than fear. They're raised without strong father figures to ground them in fundamental truths and instead adhere the relativity single mothers hold ('don't do bad things' but 'we do what we can to survive') on top of just being you know, w*men in general.
Add to that lack of any religious foundation (agonistic theist by default), any cultural foundation (no attachment to your 2 disparate races), any familial or community foundation (ostracized by family, hates their country) - all while slurping down media that teaches them nothing is concrete, everything changes, your future is fucked
Yeah no wonder why they can't be genuine - they don't even understand what genuine means.
