If he didn't want to suffer, he wouldn't have continued to live. The thing that would have killed him at that point is to see an Asuka who would just do whatever he wanted her to do.

In this scene they are hurting each other physically and emotionally, but they have rejected instrumentality and will continue to try to find the right emotional distance between each other, even if they struggle and hurt each other in the process

if i were shinji i would have rewritten the timeline so everyone was happy and not a broken damaged mess
