Daily Eden: It's An Endless World
Hey hey hey, it's been a while since Earthchild. Today we start with an older manga. Hopefully it's better than the last one.

In the panic surrounding a worldwide pandemic which kills 15 percent of the population and cripples many more, a secret organization, the Propater, topples the UN and seizes control of much of the world. A boy and a girl, raised in an abandoned virology research center, immune to the virus, are attacked by the Propater and escape.

Twenty years later, the boy is the most powerful drug lord in South America. He aids his son from behind the scenes as he evades and eventually with the help of mercenaries from Nomad (some of them former Propater operatives) fights the Propater. As the plot develops focus shifts away from the main character and develops many sub-plots dedicated to terrorism, Human-improvement, the struggle of the developing countries and the power battles between the drug cartels and Propater.

For anyone reading this for the first time, don't be fooled by the prologue chapter, this isn't only post-apocalyptic sci-fi.
The story will soon turn into a favela slice of life with drug dealers and prostitutes.
And then it will turn into a battle manga with corporate terrorists and NWO paramilitaries.
And then it will turn into... something about Gnosticism.
It's a wild ride.

Funny this happened with another work by the mangaka also on the catalog.

Eden got a volume storytime early during the pandemic. Didn't read it then cuz I already read it recently but multiple comments in the first thread were bashing it. I remember one called it pretentious trash. I enjoyed it though. Definitely one of my favorites.

Thanks, OP. Never read this one before, and the first chapter has piqued my interest. Hoping it does not get -too- preachy, but so far issues of philosophy and ethics are portrayed fine imho.
I'm particularly impressed by the artwork here. Having read Meguru before, this definitely feels like a step up from the author quality-wise.

Eden is one of my favorite manga, despite its unevenness. I really wish Hiroki was bigger in the west, and I wish he had kept his art style from the middle of Eden. I think he peaked there. Meguru looks too clean and digital, it lacks grit. I also feel like the current market really lacks the sprawling multi-generational saga that Eden depicts.

Much like Hiroki I am also a fan of whores. I read in one of his author notes that he use to live in a really rough area near a lot of Yakuza/ prostitutes and I've always wondered if that influenced Eden's themes. Do any anon's have more knowledge of the author himself? Also People Get Ready is a goated song. Iconic.

Like with any kind of work, the output will be affected by skill, effort, vision, and interest/engagement. However, no matter how great these attributes are, time tends to have the greatest effect on the final result. Not only because a lack of it hinders the artist from realizing their vision, but because the previously mentioned attributes tend to get affected negatively by a lack of time.
Stress and fatigue are of course also related, as well as a lack of motivation caused by not being able to freely create or realize one's visions.

Or they're just whiny Japanese men that feel unfulfilled and inferior to their idols because they can't accept that digital is a perfectly valid medium and that they're just performing worse due to being limited by time and their own technique.

Anonymous No.281732359

Digital just don't have the same look as analog as a base. Many potential reasons why it's so: the much more complex processes of analog, the workspace difference (A4 paper vs thousands x thousands of pixel) giving different perspective to small details and how to approach them, screen tones, etc. Easy reference, if you have a physical copy of a manga, just hold it up and look at it compared to a scan and there's already differences in color shades.
You have to try extra hard to make digital look like analog and people just inherently prefer the look of analog even if they don't realize it. Mangaka don't really get worse, maybe some unfamiliarity with the tools at some point, but the tools just make the products look different.

NTA but I think he's referring to the perspective being funky. It looks like there are mountains in the distance, but the vanishing point is above their level. If the terrain were perfectly flat, the horizon would be higher than the mountains, so their placement doesn't make sense relative to the city. Only nerds would get bothered by it though, hence the Simpsons reference.

I think it's an amalgamation of different reasons, really. While indeed time is a contributing factor. We can only speculate and the only one that can confirm the true reason is the mangaka themselves.
But you are correct in that blaming the tools is wrong. It is about individual output rather than a blanket effect.

Endo's previous manga was in Monthly Shonen Magazine and his latest is in it's supplementry web publication Getsu Maga Kichi. It's basically for B-list stuff.

I didn’t enjoy this manga. It kept killing off characters, and almost every other chapter turned into some depressing tragedy. Eventually, I just stopped caring about what was happening

They started releasing a remaster of this here recently so started rereading it, nice coincidence. Have fond memory of this series. Sadly this type of manga is incredibly rare.
