Not as a story, but it's a strange combination of elements that, when combined, make it more memorable than G Gundam and Gundam X (the three Gundams from the 1990s).

American nostalgia aside, Wing is also very well remembered in Japan (despite the TV series being a mid-season run), and EW probably deserves credit for that, as it was a huge success and is still visually impressive today.

Yes, but those are UC, not particularly popular by the way and 0083 and 08th were playing on another front. People here love Turn A, but I'd like to point out that the show was a flop in Japan. I'd venture to say that much of the blame lies with the Gundam Gaijin design, which took years to be re-evaluated and appreciated even by the Japanese.

I tried rewatching it a couple years ago, and it turns out the story is actually pretty fucking awful. I couldn't stomach more than like 5 episodes.

Well for sure we had a G-Witch series befoe which clearly triggered a resident anti-yuri schizo for years and still counting.

Jump a few centuries into the future, maybe when humanity in Wing's timeline has moved out into the solar system proper. Make the "returning characters" the Gundams themselves. Recreate Sandrock, Deathscythe Hell, Heavyarms, Altron, and Wing Zero, and give them to five NEW pilots. That sounds like it could be fun, a way to give us some nostalgia but also move the storytelling forward.

Code Geass did the premise and themes better.

That said, it's like a hybrid of every 80s action movie (rambo, 007) combined with Giant Robots. You see terrorist supersoldier kids doing guerilla ops against a military and racking high bodycounts. Americans have nostalgia for it because was nothing of that sort on television before. At most, they had sanitized media like Gi Joe where goofy inoffensive villains fly out of parachutes or were hit by lasers because Christians aggressively censored American cartoons on TV networks. So anime like Gundam Wing had a major edge over other cartoons for not being made with that demographic in mind.

However it had a lot of internal problems, the writer quit halfway and they had to salvage the project last minutes. Thats why the pilots were flat characters and why there were two recap episodes. Only the antagonists and relena had proper development. Despite this, it was 10x superior to western cartoons.
