What was it like being an weeb in the early 2000's?

I was a full weeb only by 2006.

But i was playing yugioh cards, building zoids and gundam gungpla by early 2000s. And owned toys for brave mecha as early as the 90s.

It was better times. Just finding anime and manga stuff was cool.

You had whatever was on TV, of course dubbed. Cartoons were super popular so you had channels like Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, but also mostly anime channels. Dragon Ball Z was like The Simpsons for these channels, long running and with infinite episodes to run trough. Otakus were a underground culture, quite comfy with friends but potential for bullying for being weird.

Fansubs and nerding out over video compression. I became a full-blown weeb when I randomly walked into a campus anime club screening.

No one got mad over "problematic" (not even a word back then) or pervy content in anime. People actually integrated into the otaku community instead of trying to westernize Japan. They mostly thought Japan was the coolest thing ever.

Also, they were mostly teenagers.
