Maybe if you were like, working in the warehouse or trying to be part of a clique in high school, not really. Or I guess if you were playing the YGO card game, but people thought you were a fag for playing Magic.
In the 00s, your high school or college or uni was 100% guaranteed to have some kind of anime club with decently high activity, the only issue would be... well, going to an anime club.
Hell, in my yearbook there were at least two guys who were literal jocks that had fucking Vegeta quotes as their graduation quotes (I for one chose a tastefully subtle Kaiji reference, since it was the newest thing I'd seen).
