Powerlevel is generally teen/early 20s concept. When you're still in subculture phase and your circle of interests revolves around school and uni. It becomes irrelevant when you get older and enter wagecuckining phase. No one cares.

I think anime was being seen as something weird for millenials and the generations that comes before.

There's still some prejudice coming from early zoomers, but all young people are really open to like anime, at least the mainstream ones like Shingeki no Kyojin or Kimetsu no Yaiba.

Depends people are definitely more open about it, many even put decals on their cars at least where I'm from. I've seen people talk about it and even put on anime on the breakroom tv (Gundam), but personally I don't talk about it unless prompted and even then it's relatively tame stuff.

My phone wallpaper has been of an anime girl since 2013.

Maybe if you were like, working in the warehouse or trying to be part of a clique in high school, not really. Or I guess if you were playing the YGO card game, but people thought you were a fag for playing Magic.
In the 00s, your high school or college or uni was 100% guaranteed to have some kind of anime club with decently high activity, the only issue would be... well, going to an anime club.
Hell, in my yearbook there were at least two guys who were literal jocks that had fucking Vegeta quotes as their graduation quotes (I for one chose a tastefully subtle Kaiji reference, since it was the newest thing I'd seen).

During late elementary - middle school in the 2000 - 2004 time-frame, anime did not carry the "loser" stigma that attached to it later. I was the "bad kid" / mild delinquent who skipped class, got in a few fights, stayed out late, &c. A couple of my friends were in the "popular" clique. One played football. Anime was middle school avant-garde —we traded it on CD-Rs like contraband. From memory, somewhere in a dusty box I still have CDs of NGE, Excel Saga, Azumanga Daioh, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Puni Puni Poemy, Lain, Kite, Trigun...
