The first two movies were barely even talked about and I think the third came at the right/worst time to be a flash point for tourists whose favorite pastime is being contrarian toward established community favorites. Then the fourth was perfect fodder for the same crowd of shitposting addicts.

Rebuild 4.0 is one of the Evangelion movies ever made.

The rebuilds had some flaws, but were ultimately kino. It perfectly encapsulates how Anno has matured as both a creator and human being while the evangelion fanbase has not. I love the original series and ending, but I also like the rebuilds and where the story ultimately ends. Shinji won.
