A fourth of Finland used to be natively Swedish-speaking, and Moomin's author was one of does Finland-Swedes living in one of the Swedish-speaking parts of Finland.
It's the same as with Belgium having both Dutch and French-speaking halves, except it was one fourth vs three fourths, and no legal language border (outside of one small part of it, the ร…land islands) was drawn so the Swedish-speaking part has kept being assimilated by Finnish and shrinking year by year.

He's like 12 at the very oldest. Many dubs (like the Finnish dub) give him a deep voice, which makes him seem way more like an older brother type character, maybe even an adult, but he's supposed to be Moomintroll's peer in age and still clearly a child. Watching as an adult, it's more clear that he's a child since while he's independent and adventurous he's clearly still tackling with children's issues and his independent introverted character has a lot more to do with feeling shy and not knowing how interact that well with others than maturity. It's very endearing to rewatch as an adult with memories of looking up to Snufkin, but now clearly seeing him for who he is.

The worst thing is that English voice actors use intonation and stress constantly to create a flowery voice, but in a way which has no meaning. They're constantly using signals meant for meaning and nuance without actually having any. They use the full bandwidth of the voice, but aren't transmitting a message. It's just aesthetics, it's the "voice actor" voice. Their voices go up and down constantly, which makes it sound engaging, essentially tricking the brain, but it's actually just meant to mask that they have no idea what's going on in the scene since they're just reading words from a page.

I don't know if it's just a different approach to voice acting or if it's because Japanese can be spoken flat without intonation with no problems, but it just works so much better. Finnish can also be spoken pretty flat without issues, Snufkin especially is a very blunt and flat speaker in the Finnish dub and it works pretty well. I can't rate it objectively because of having watched way too much Finnish dub moomins, but it does sound closer to the Japanese version than the English one.

The Japanese version of this series is really good. At first it felt weird to hear Moomintroll's voice to sound like a little kid's but then I thought about it and it started make sense because Moomin still is a kid. They also knew what they were doing when choosing the voice for Snufkin. Everytime he speaks I get goosebumps. So sad nobody has subbed all the episodes. They really should do that.

The Finnish VAs also do the Swedish dub (in a very heavy Fenno-Swede accent). Japanese is of course one definitive way to watch it since it was made in Japan, but to say Finnish "makes no sense" is bullshit. Tove Jansson and other Fenno-Swedes basically pronounce Swedish words with the Finnish word pronunciation, so it makes sense for Finns to do the voice acting.

I guess I never noticed it, but the Swedish aired one does use different VAs, so it makes more sense in that way. The only Swedish dub I've heard was done by the Finnish VAs, so the accent is a lot stronger, and not exactly "accurate" (Moomintroll being the exeption). I'd still say Swedish, Finnish and Japanese are all acceptable, where Swedish is better for Scandinavian watchers, Finnish for Finns and maybe Estonians and Japanese for anime watchers. All my Swedish friends say it's easier for them to understand my Finnish pronunciation of Swedish than Danish, so I don't see why skรฅnska not being as close to finlandssvenska to more commonly used Swedish matters.

Absolutely not, it's actually a pitched language and the pitch of your words can change the meaning of what you're saying, albeit not as extreme as Chinese. They clearly just didn't get the memo that this scene is being murmured softly in reverence, because there are tons and tons of English language movies with this exact same kind of dialog, it has nothing to do with the language itself.

I know Skane used to belong to Denmark so that's probably why some Danes and Swedes from Skane understand each other but would a Swede from the northern part of the country understand a Dane?

That's why I corrected my earlier post, and it was a "heavy accent" precisely because it was done by Finns, with the Moomintroll VA being the exception. While not a heavy accent, I'd say findlandssvenska is still in terms of pronunciation closer to Finnish rather than Swedish, but yes, the actual Fenno-Swedes do sound different than other Finns speaking Swedish. And maybe it is actually very close to Swedish, but at least I've heard that in Stockholm Swedes do easily switch to speaking English when Finns try to speak Swedish, even if it was a Fenno-Swede speaking Swedish to them.

He frequently hangs out with the adults, only occasionally taking part in the children's shenanigans, more reminiscent of a young adult who sometimes indulges the kids.
