Different approaches and lessons from the two. I think Stein's gate did it better in terms of just the time travel part and going for conspiracies instead of just raw sci-fi. Re:zero has an insane amount of world building.. but re:zero is very much better in the novels. Stein's gate is better as far as the animes go.

also subaru's checkpoints aren't defined by anything in particular which makes it more obvious it's whatever the author wants at that point. Erased which aired on winter 2016 had this exact same problem so it was impossible to ignore when re:zero first season released on spring 2016

Half the time it isn't explained, just because it can be explained by time travel doesn't mean it is. Having a "time loop" doesn't make something a time travel story, especially if the mechanics aren't explained and time travel isn't the primary focus of the story.

You can say all you want about Steins Gate but at least there are mechanics to the time shit and a bit better story than whatever the fuck Re:Zero is about anymore. It doesn't chuck a bunch of shit at you with a lot of mysteries where the characters refuse to ask about or anything, and even when they get answered it's so so so unsatisfying.

I find Subaru more entertaining than Okabe desu. I do like Kurisu more than Emilia, but I like Rem more than whatever then name of the dumb one was, and I like Otto, Ram, and Felix more than their equivalents.

I know Steins;Gate has a few fandiscs and Zero, but the fact that it functions incredibly well as its own self contained story really should be brought up more often to praise it. It's honestly one of those things I love about Visual Novels: you have to actually write a full story, beginning, middle and end completely before you can put it out (besides the episodic ones, obviously), meaning that the writing has to be a lot tighter than a long running series
