Alright, I did it. The manga allegedly suggests that the rest of the Earth is just normal. But look at those scenes with the giant mech. Does that look like normal Japan to you? There's some weird floating city type shit in one of the clips. I don't think any of this takes place in our world, or anything resembling our world. Hakase opened some kind of weird portal and Yuuko and Mio fell through and ended up here, in the CITY, but they either have magic, or they are the products of some advanced civilization that has regressed back to a modern-ish level of technology. But then we got people plugging rotary phones into power sockets to make calls. It's a wild place, almost like they're pretending to have the level of technology they do, without really understanding any of it. Not to mention sentient animals putting on plays and getting jobs selling Takoyaki and I don't even know what.
