Naruto went into the war just having understanding Nine tails. He never trained where he could master his element or others. He gave bits of his Chakra to replenish others and protect them instead of the "murder everything" energy the Kyubi gave before.

Shadow Clone jutsu is something that most people aren't able to hone to a highly effective level because the initial chakra requirement to even be able to use it, as well as the fact it's not typically an effective use of chakra in a battle which is why most people opt for a substitution jutsu or different type of clone. For ninjas that do use it it's situational or done with a specific intent. Naruto is able to spam it freely and uses it like it's second nature, easily swapping places with clones and using them to skirmish or gather intel.

I believe thats one of the reasons it is/was a forbidden technique and you had to read the scroll. If you're mentally prepared then you split with the same mindset and understand that experiences are shared after you poof. If you're mentally weak and someone just taught you the technique without explaining it you could have all kinds of issues. Even Naruto's clones bicker sometimes.
